Passengers on a Chinese plane were treated to sauna-like conditions when the cabin became filled with steam.

Those on board the Shenzhen Airlines plane on Saturday became alarmed when steam spread quickly through the cabin after the air conditioning was switched on.

The crew told passengers that it was due to the high humidity caused by heavy rain outside, reported People's Daily Online.

'They tell us it's because the outside humidity is so high that the plane's air conditioning has pulled in some of the humidity. The plane has become a dehumidifier.'

The plane was waiting on the runway at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and had not yet taken off.

Passengers were told to evacuate the plane after 20 minutes because the cabin had still not cleared.

Qiu Xihe, an official from the China Airlines Engineering Maintenance Department, said: 'The main reason for this is torrential rain at the time resulting in humidity levels being too high.

'Under normal circumstances, when it's not so humid, the steam will dissipate before the cool air enters the cabin but the humidity at this time meant this didn't happen.

'However this is still normal. Every year during the monsoon season the major airlines will experience this situation. This will not affect the safety of the plane or the air conditioning system.'

He explained that because the cabin is completely air tight, the effect of humidity is more pronounced.

He said that under normal conditions the steam would have dissipated after 20 minutes or shortly after take-off.

75 flights out of Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport were cancelled due to heavy rain on Saturday afternoon.
