Al Pacino And Robert De Niro Slammed As ‘Selfish’ And ‘Creepy’ For Having Babies In Their 80s And 70s
Critics have criticized Al Pacino and Robert De Niro for having children later in life.
This week, it was revealed that the Scarface actor's 29-year-old girlfriend is expecting their fourth child together.
De Niro said that he had just given birth to his seventh child in a recent interview for his upcoming film.
Pacino is currently 83 years old, and when his newborn is 18 he will be 101.
De Niro, who is currently 79 years old, will be 97 when his youngest child finally reaches the adult age of 18.
Journalist Jaci Stephen criticized the acting pair for having children who were in their 80s and 70s.
For continuing to have children, she has referred to them as "selfish" and "creepy."
"In contrast to the gushing celebrations from De Niro's celeb pals, I found the whole thing rather creepy – and not a little bit sad," she wrote in an op-ed for the Daily Mail.
"And that's because the hard reality for geriatric dads like De Niro, and now Pacino, is that they'll barely live long enough to be remembered by their new babies."
She added: "Thinking about Robert and Al getting down to business is like imagining The Muppet Show's Statler and Waldorf in the nude. It's just wrong.”
"It's also rather depressing – for it shines a light on a rather uncomfortable hypocrisy when it comes to the reception of women who become mothers in older age."
Even Pacino himself cited a comment in which he lamented the fact that his father had abandoned him when he was just two years old.
The actor expressed his desire to have grown up with his father in his life in a 2014 interview with The New Yorker magazine.
"It's the missing link," he said.
"Having children has helped a lot. I consciously knew that I didn't want to be like my dad. I wanted to be there."
Not just De Niro and Pacino are famous fathers who had children later in life.
When former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone said he was expecting his fourth child at the age of 89, many were similarly shocked.
Mick Jagger, the frontman of the Rolling Stones, welcomed his eighth child at the age of 73.
Jaci Stephen said in her piece: "The hard reality for geriatric dads like De Niro, and now Pacino, is that they'll barely live long enough to be remembered by their new babies."
