It may not have the ‘cool' factor that smoking once had, but vaping is meant to be a way to kick smoking without damaging your lungs.

Or so 33-year-old Richard Courtney thought. Richard bought a vape in the hope of giving up his 16 year habit, but ended up with a nasty surprise. The $150 device was meant to turn nicotine fluid into vapour water. Instead it let hot nicotine trickle into his throat, resulting in what he claims is a burn through his left lung.

Richard said he walking home from a mates house when he first felt the horrible sensation:

"Then it felt like I'd got a trapped nerve in my shoulder. In the morning I had a really tight chest and couldn't breathe properly. I went to hospital. One of the nurses there put my vape on an oxygen tube and showed that it was spitting liquid out."

He now says his lung is working at just 25% capacity following the burn:

"I started vaping to try to give up after 16 years of smoking. I can't believe it put me in hospital."

Richard is now back at work, and awaiting the vape makers to comment on the incident.
