Many people believe spotting these creatures signals upcoming disasters
Three Massive 'Apocalypse Fish' Wash Ashore Within A Week, Prompting Scientific Investigation
A mysterious deep-sea fish, which many believe is linked to warnings of danger or disaster, has shown up on shores not once but three times in just a single week — leaving experts both puzzled and intrigued.
The ocean is full of strange and unexplored mysteries. From lost underwater cities to eerie sounds that continue to baffle researchers, the sea hides more than it reveals. But often, the most fascinating things are the ones that the waves deliver right to our feet.
While it’s true that the ocean’s largest creatures tend to make headlines, there’s one in particular — dramatically referred to as the 'apocalypse fish' — that’s been making waves for different reasons. This eerie fish has washed ashore three separate times in a short span, sparking serious concern.
What is the apocalypse fish?
The so-called 'apocalypse fish', also known as the 'doomsday fish', is actually a creature called the Oarfish. It has a serpent-like body that makes it look like something out of a mythical tale. According to The Guardian, this creature really does resemble something from fantasy.
Oarfish can grow to enormous lengths, usually reaching anywhere between 8 to 11 meters. However, there are reports, although not confirmed — that suggest some may grow as long as 17 meters.
One of the most striking things about the Oarfish is how it looks. Its glowing blue scales and a ribbon-like fin in shades of orange or pink stretch from its head to its tail, giving it a surreal and almost magical appearance unlike any other fish commonly seen in the ocean.
What makes this fish even more unique is how rarely it's seen. Along the coast of California, it has only been spotted about 20 times in the past 124 years. In New Zealand, it has been sighted a similar number of times throughout the country’s history.
So, the fact that three of them have appeared on beaches within just one week is both surprising and a little unsettling, especially when you consider that these sightings often come with a sense of unease.
Why are Oarfish called apocalypse fish?
The nickname ‘apocalypse fish’ comes from an old superstition. Some people believe that when these rare fish wash up on shore, it’s a sign that something bad, like a natural disaster is about to happen. So, when one appears, it’s often seen as a warning.
That’s why scientists are especially concerned about these three recent sightings. Two of the fish were found in New Zealand, at Aramoana and Birdlings Flat, while the third washed up on Ocean Beach in Australia — all within the same week.
In 2019, a study published in GeoScienceWorld found no scientific evidence linking Oarfish sightings to earthquakes or other disasters. According to the researchers, it’s more a matter of folklore than fact. Still, many people continue to believe the legend.
Whether these latest appearances will lead to anything significant remains to be seen. While science says there’s nothing to worry about, it’s still unsettling when a fish this rare turns up dead three times in such a short span. It doesn’t feel like just a coincidence to some.
