Well, the company can at least afford to throw the money away
Apple is known as one of the largest and most successful companies in the world, but even they couldn’t bring one ambitious project to life.
After years of effort, the company has decided to abandon it completely.
When people think of cutting-edge technology, Apple is often the first name that comes to mind.
Their presence in the tech world is massive, with iPhones dominating the smartphone market for years.
However, even for a giant like Apple, not every idea works out.
Behind the scenes, Apple had been quietly working on breaking into an entirely new industry.
However, after a decade of effort and billions spent, they finally decided to call it quits.
While it's not uncommon for large tech companies to scrap projects, this particular cancellation came with an eye-watering price tag.
Over the past 10 years, Apple spent a staggering $10 billion on a project that never even reached consumers.
What we’re talking about here is Project Titan, Apple’s secretive car initiative.
The goal was to revolutionize the automotive industry, but things didn’t go as planned.
Even with all their resources, the project never materialized into something ready for the market, leaving many wondering what went wrong.
In early 2024, Apple officially pulled the plug on Project Titan. The decision was communicated internally, leaving 2,000 employees who had worked on it scrambling for answers.
The project’s vision shifted multiple times over the years. At one point, it was supposed to rival Tesla as an electric car.
Then it pivoted to focus on self-driving technology, only to switch back to being an electric vehicle competitor.
This constant back-and-forth undoubtedly wasted millions, and ultimately, the company decided it was no longer worth pursuing.
When the project was cancelled, Apple redirected its efforts toward generative artificial intelligence, a growing focus in the tech industry.
Unfortunately, this decision also led to job losses for 600 employees who had been part of Project Titan.
On social media, people were quick to poke fun at Apple’s billion-dollar failure.
While some sympathized with the workers affected, most couldn’t help but mock the tech giant for its misstep.
One user humorously commented: "They can afford it from all the money they annually collect from re-releasing the same phone."
Another added: "So this why y'all stop giving us a charger in the box ?" A third chimed in with: "Imagine a car that starts glitching when the new model comes out."
Someone else joked: "Billion dollars... I guess iPhones is about to cost us $10.00 more so they can make that money back up lol."
However, not everyone was critical. One optimistic comment read: "He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life."
