Ariana Grande, the chart-topping pop sensation, is known for her powerful vocals, energetic performances, and signature ponytail. But despite her success and seemingly glamorous life, the singer has been open about her struggles with mental health. In a recent revelation, Grande admitted to being on "a lot of antidepressants" during what she describes as the lowest time of her life.
In a rare and candid video on TikTok, the 29-year-old singer shared her thoughts on body shaming and made a courageous admission of consuming alcohol while taking antidepressants.
Beginning the video with a vulnerable admission, Ariana Grande shared that she typically struggles with opening up about herself but feels a responsibility to speak out.
The pop star addressed concerns from fans about her body and emphasized that comparing her current appearance to her past self can have harmful consequences.
"The body that you've been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body," she said.
"I was on a lot of antidepressants, drinking on them, eating poorly, and at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider 'my healthy'. But that, in fact, wasn't 'my healthy'.
"And I know I shouldn't have to explain that but I do feel like maybe having an openness and some sort of vulnerability here will be… something good might come of it."
She went on to tell her fans she thinks they're all beautiful.
"No matter what you’re going through. No matter what weight, no matter how you like to do your makeup these days, no matter what cosmetic procedures you’ve had or not or anything," she said.
Speaking more generally about body shamers, she said: "I just wanted to address your concerns about my body and talk a little bit about what it means to be a person with a body and to be seen and to be paid such close attention to.
"I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people's bodies, no matter what.
"If you think you're saying something good or well intentioned, whatever it is: healthy, unhealthy, big, small, this, that, sexy, not sexy... we just shouldn't.
"We should really work towards not doing that as much."
Ariana Grande also emphasized the importance of being kind and considerate when it comes to commenting on someone's appearance.
She suggested that there are ways to offer compliments or simply ignore something you don't like without resorting to meanness or negativity.
Her message serves as a reminder that we all have our own struggles and insecurities and that unkind comments can have a far-reaching and damaging impact.
Ariana's call for empathy and understanding is especially relevant in the age of social media, where hurtful comments and cyberbullying have become all too common.
Her willingness to speak out on these issues is a testament to her character and her commitment to making the world a better, kinder place.
Urging people to think before writing comments about people’s bodies, she added: “There are many different kinds of beautiful. There are many different ways to look healthy and beautiful.”
As her video came to a close, Ariana Grande left her fans with a powerful message of self-love and acceptance. She emphasized the importance of being happy in your skin, regardless of what others say or think.
"I just think you're beautiful and wanted to share some feelings," she said.
Ariana had previously said her anxiety and depression was at an "all-time high" after she cancelled a number of meet and greets in 2019.
In another Instagram post at the time, she said: "Today has been an extra rough one. After a handful of panic attacks, I feel like the wisest decision would be to not do sound check party or m&g [meet and greet] today and preserve my energy for the show."
And in 2021, Ariana shared a touching post for Mental Health Awareness Month. In it, she said "healing isn’t linear, fun, quick or at all easy".
It's no surprise that Ariana Grande's TikTok video sparked a strong reaction among her fans. Her honest and vulnerable message touched a chord with millions of people, many of whom took to the comments section to express their support and gratitude.
One tiktoker said: "i fully agree, i know you will always look after yourself and everyone else should respect that and understand that, hope you're okay ðŸ¤ðŸ¤ðŸ¤"
Another said: "Thank you for being so raw and vulnerable, you are the sweetest."
A third tiktoker said: "I love you ari, u don't have to explain yourself 💌💌"
"Beautiful message ðŸ™âœ¨ People should have more empathy with others, no one knows what the other person is going through in their life. ♥ï¸" said a fourth.
