Annegret Raunigk was not a lonely woman who spent her whole life trying to have a family. She was already a mother to 13 children before the quadruplets came along, which is way too much for a lot of us already. Ranging in age from 9 to 44 years, some of her children already have children of their own, making her one unusual granny.

Raunigk decided to become pregnant again after her youngest child requested a little brother or sister. Apparently, that’s all it took for Raunigk to set about defying nature and seeking out fertility treatment. We’re not sure if her youngest was happy with four new siblings, but we guess it’s a case of being careful what you wish for!

Unlike most women, who tend to get pregnant in their more fertile years, Raunigk was unable to do things the old-fashioned way. Menopause had well and truly arrived for her and she had to find a more creative way to fulfill her daughter’s wish. She turned to IVF treatment, but what she required was so controversial, it’s illegal in Germany.

For the procedure to work, Raunigk needed both a donor egg and sperm, meaning she is not actually the biological mother of the babies she carried. In Germany, it is illegal to undergo artificial insemination with both a donor egg and sperm, so she had to hop on a plane to Ukraine in order to find a doctor who was willing to help.

The mom-to-be knew she was pregnant but when her ultrasound revealed multiple babies she was completely shocked. Medical professionals told her she was carrying not just one, but four fetuses. This was basically a medical miracle when you consider how old she is. I wouldn’t have been able to believe the screen if it happened to me!

Raunigk and her family were overjoyed by the news of the quadruplets, but for her doctors, there was nothing but concern. One of the doctors involved asked her to consider 'selective reduction' which meant aborting one or more of the fetuses to remove some of the stress on Raunigks aged body.

Raunigk would not listen to her doctor's advice. She decided to go ahead and carry all 4 children despite all the risks involved. She ended up getting criticized by people from all over the globe that read about her pregnancy but she refused to let what others said deter her. She was unbothered and wouldn't let a thing they said bring her down from the excitement of her families new additions.

Doctors were amazed to find out that each of the eggs, 4 in total, had successfully implanted. That is pretty rare for IVF. It's normal to use multiple eggs with the procedure because the chance of the eggs developing is pretty low. Raunigk was an anomaly of sorts since her body was long past the normal point of baby-making.

The doctors told Raunigk that the pregnancy would be very stressful for her and they were not lying. She ended up being hospitalized 3 months before the children were due to be born when she went into early labor. Most children that are born so early don't make it and almost every one of them requires some kind of intensive care and or surgery.

All of the quadruplets ended up surviving which was a wonderful surprise for all involved. Babies who are born early are always at risk, especially when they are born so far ahead of schedule. The babies, Neeta, Dries, Bence and Fijon, all more than tripled their birth weight while they were in the hospital.
