One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, or in the case of Balenciaga, a coveted item of the season. Right now, you can claim a designer trash bag for only USD $1,790. The controversial accessory was unveiled earlier this year at Balenciaga’s Winter 22 Collection fashion show.
Balenciaga Is Selling Luxury Trash Bags For $1,790 Each
If ordinary trash bags are not working for you then brace yourself because fashion house Balenciaga has a great offer for you. Right now, you can claim a designer trash bag for only USD $1,790.
The controversial accessory was unveiled earlier this year at Balenciaga’s Winter 22 Collection fashion show.
The luxury fashion house is selling a drawstring calfskin pouch in the shape of a trash bag, a move that seems copied from Zoolander's “derelicte” fashion line.
The brand’s “trash pouch” comes in four different colors: black, white and red, blue and black, or yellow and black.
“I couldn’t miss an opportunity to make the most expensive trash bag in the world, because who doesn’t love a fashion scandal?” Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, told WWD.
And we have to give it to the guy; he certainly knows how to create some buzz, good or bad.
The piece first debuted as part of the opening look from Balenciaga’s Fall 22 show in which Gvasalia, who is Georgian and was once a child refugee, paid homage to the victims of the Ukraine war. Models trudged down a runway filled with artificial snow, recalling the refugee experience.
While we applaud Balenciaga for revolutionising women’s fashion and innovating haute couture, their recent inventions have become questionable. Like Kim Kardashian's masked, incognito look for the MET gala, and in their most recent couture show, Nicole Kidman was modeling a shiny scrunched-up silver gown that also had a garbage bag, or space blanket quality to it.
Internet also went into frenzy, once the prices were dropped for the luxury trash bag.
One person wrote: “Balenciaga has a trash bag for sell for $1,795. I think designer fashion is a morbid social experiment.”
Another said: “The next time someone calls me a trash bag I'm gonna assume we're talking about the balenciaga thingy.”
A third person commented: “If you can afford to spend $1,790 on a #Balenciaga fashion accessory that looks like a trash bag, you should have enough cash in the bank to fill it up with cash and donate it to your nearest charity.”
While another wrote: “If you’re walking around with a balenciaga trash bag you spend $1,700 on I will send some men I know to rob you.”
This isn’t the first time the Spanish luxury fashion house has faced backlash.
In May 2022, Balenciaga was panned by consumers for their ‘Rubbish Bin’ shoes that purposely looked like worn-in kicks valued to be around US$2,590 (AUD $3,718 or £2,134). The brand also announced that they would release 100 pairs that looked ‘extra destroyed’ for those wanting to look a little more ‘chic’.
Balenciaga’s trash pouch has already been named by GQ as a must have, but if you want the look for less there’s always a box of large “superior strength” trash bags for $13.89.
