A woman whose husband left her when she suddenly started growing facial hair has revealed she now loves her beard and moustache.

Mandeep Kaur, 34, from Punjab, India, and her ex tied the knot in 2012 – and she thought she had found her true love.

But a few years after their marriage, when her appearance began to change, he showed his true colors and ran away.

After being unceremoniously dumped, Mandeep spiralled into a depression - but she sought help and quickly came to accept her facial hair.

Since embracing her look, Mandeep has also dabbled in farming with her brothers.

She sought help for the stinging feeling of rejection and turned to spirituality. Mandeep began attending a gurdwara, a place of worship among Sikhs where those who follow the religion can learn the basics of their faith.

They are usually run and managed by volunteers. The best-known Gurdwaras – which roughly translate to ‘Guru’s Door’ – are located in Amritsar, the second largest city in the state of Punjab.

Mandeep also says that she has been blessed by the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism, which is also revered as a living concept within the culture.

It’s thanks to her faith that she’s learned to accept her facial hair even though it drove her ex-husband away.

For years she agonized over beards and mustaches, but now she has come to see them as just another part of her.

Channeling a newfound confidence, Mandeep now refuses to shave it and wears her full-grown beard with a turban.

Hirsutism is excessive hair growth in certain parts of the body which mainly affects women.

It is relatively common and often a long-term problem, but there are many treatments to control it.

In many cases, it is not clear why this happens. Some women seem to experience excess hair growth as they age, especially after menopause.

The most common cause behind atypical hair growth is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This can also cause acne and irregular periods.

Other rare causes of hirsutism may be the use of certain medicines and anabolic steroids.
