Bella Ramsey reflected on the challenges they faced after publicly coming out as non-binary in 2023
The Last Of Us Star Bella Ramsey Shares Why They Have Some Regrets About Publicly Coming Out As Non-Binary
Bella Ramsey has spoken candidly about their experience of coming out as non-binary, admitting there are moments when they wish they had handled it differently.
The British actor, who was 19 at the time, came out as genderfluid during the promotion of The Last of Us back in January 2023. But shortly after that announcement, they were met with a wave of negativity online and quickly saw just how cruel the internet can be.
Now, at 21 years old and with season two of The Last of Us airing Sundays at 9pm ET on HBO, Ramsey is revisiting the experience and reflecting on how everything unfolded and how it felt watching their identity become a talking point across headlines.
In a new conversation with The Guardian, Ramsey was asked to describe how they feel now about the way they came out publicly as non-binary.
"Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn't, because I didn't want it to become a headline and a big thing." they shared in the interview.
"And obviously it was going to, and I didn't really understand that at the time. And I wasn't really prepared for that. But on the other hand, people have said to me that it's been very helpful for them seeing some representation."
"So it's been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I'm keeping a secret."
Ramsey has since shifted their perspective and now feels that conversations around their gender or sexuality shouldn't be front and center. While they're open to discussing it, they hope the focus moves on to other parts of their life and work.
They added: "But now I'm like, 'I'll talk about it, but I don't want it to be the focus any more.' I guess I'm just quite chill with it. And I want everyone else to be as chill with it basically."

This comes just after Ramsey, who is from Nottingham, England, decided to deactivate their Instagram account last week. They said part of the reason behind the decision was inspired by two actors they deeply admire Kit Harington, from Game of Thrones, and Jesse Eisenberg, who starred with them in Resistance.
"Those are the two actors who I just thought were the coolest people to ever walk the earth, and neither of them had social media." Ramsey told the outlet.
"I remember them just being so normal and funny and interesting. They were famous because they were great at something, not because they were celebrities. They never pushed themselves out there and made themselves more famous."
They also mentioned that the main reason they ever joined Instagram in the first place was to address the large number of fake accounts pretending to be them.
