Despite the settlement, Bill Gates remains among the wealthiest people in the world
More details have emerged about billionaire Bill Gates’s divorce settlement with his former wife Melinda, with tax filings revealing a staggering payout that came in just under $8 billion.
The couple began divorce proceedings in 2021, and as part of the settlement reached in 2024, the Microsoft co-founder transferred approximately $7.88 billion to Melinda’s charity, Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, according to financial records reviewed by the New York Times.
The financial impact of the split has been significant, with Gates’s divorce now ranking among the most expensive separations ever recorded.
Altogether, Melinda Gates is reported to have received a total settlement valued at roughly $76 billion.
A large portion of that money has been directed toward Melinda’s independent philanthropic work, with the nearly $8 billion donation from her ex-husband forming only one part of a broader agreement aimed at supporting women-focused initiatives and families facing hardship.
An additional $4 billion is believed to have been donated to similar causes in the years since, as the settlement included a commitment to contribute $12.5 billion overall, with a spokesperson for Pivotal Philanthropies confirming that Bill’s “agreement has been fulfilled.”
That same year, Melinda announced that she would also step away from the charitable organization she had co-founded with Bill, which was previously known as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Now operating simply as the Gates Foundation, Melinda explained her decision in a 2024 statement, saying: "This is not a decision I came to lightly."
"I am immensely proud of the foundation that Bill and I built together, and of the extraordinary work it is doing to address inequities around the world."
She went on to emphasize the impact the donation would have on women and girls worldwide, adding: "This is a critical moment for women and girls in the U.S., and around the world-and those fighting to protect and advance equality are in urgent need of support."
After the initial upheaval, Melinda later described the end of their 30-year marriage as painful but necessary, explaining that the relationship was no longer healthy and that trust had broken down.
Bill, for his part, has spoken openly about his regret over the marriage ending, as well as his disappointment over Melinda stepping back from the foundation they had grown into one of the largest charitable organizations in the world, outside of the Catholic Church.
Reflecting on the situation, he told the Times: "When we got divorced it was tough and then she made the decision to leave the foundation — I was disappointed that she took the option to go off."
