Birthmarks come in all shapes and sizes and can be anywhere on the body. Unfortunately, they're not something we have any control over. Either you're born with one or you're not and what you get is what you get. With that said, it's very common for a person to be self conscious about their birthmark.
Nonetheless, people have gotten creative and covering up their birthmarks with clever designs. Some birthmarks are completely covered while others are simply incorporated into the tattoo. Take a look at some of the unique designs below.
#1 Some birthmarks are just the perfect shape and size to use as the base for something.
For example, this birthmark was the perfect base for Mr. Potato Head!
#2 A life story spread out on top of a birthmark.
The birthmark actually makes the perfect background for this type of image.
#3 He turned his birthmark into a map of an imaginary world.
Although it's not an actual tattoo since he drew it with a pen, the concept is still really cool!
#4 When your birthmark looks like a cookie, you gotta do what you gotta do.
And in this case it means you gotta get a cookie monster tattoo.
#5 A beautiful flower tattoo covering an extensive port wine stain birthmark.
The red tones from the birthmark blend in perfectly well with the flowers.
#6 What used to be a brown oval birthmark transformed into an owl.
Another great subject choice to cover something brown.
#7 A hippo shaped birthmark that got scenery added to it.
Now the hippo has a pond to drink from and some trees for shade!
#8 If you have a birthmark that grows hair, it only makes sense to get the appropriate tattoo around it.
Now instead of a growing hair mole, he has a hair growing Wooly!
#9 Covering up a big birthmark isn't necessarily so bad.
Because you get to cover it up with a big badass tattoo, like this Philippine Eagle.
#10 Or with this even bigger wolf.
Sometimes you just gotta go big or go home.
#11 Not every birthmark looks the same, some may be more difficult to cover up.
But that doesn't mean the job can't be accomplished! You just need the right subject, like this Japanese styled koi fish.
#12 If your birthmark is more sporadic looking, choose a watercolor abstract looking tattoo to cover it.
This watercolor rose did the perfect job.
#13 Neutral Milk Hotel's cover art for "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" turned into a tattoo.
The use of this birthmark as a part of this cover art is just brilliant.
#14 A birthmark that was manipulated into art.
You can't even tell it's a birthmark, it all looks like an intentional tattoo!
#15 A turtle tattoo covering up the birthmark.
How clever to go with a brown turtle shell to match the birthmark.
#16 A mole that was transformed into an island.
All it needed was an outline and some cool sea creatures and objects added around it.
#17 Moles turned into the stars in the universe.
This one is more on the subtle side, yet still very creative.
#18 With tiny moles, you don't actually have to cover them up.
Just be creative with what you want to add to it, like turning this mole into the iconic Marilyn Monroe mole.
#19 Here the mole is used not only as a part of the tattoo, but the center of it!
Quite clever actually, now you can't even tell it was a mole.
#20 Who needs a cover up when you can just add something next to it that gives it completely new context?
Like this clever Pacman tattoo.
