Blind 12-Year-Old Sees Mom For The First Time!

Meet 12 year old Christopher Ward. When Chris was born his mother Marquita Hackley was told her son had a rare condition with no cure. This left him legally blind as a baby. When doctors told this mom that there wasn't anything that she could do to help her blind son, she promised herself that she would to prove them wrong.

Christopher was born with optic nerve hypoplasia, which means he can only see objects from really up close. His eye muscles never fully developed, leaving this 12-year-old considered legally blind. He types his homework from a braille typewriter and uses an abacus to do his math homework.

A few months ago, Marquita and Chris went on a trip to Washington D.C. to try a new technology called ESight. Although Hackley was skeptical about this technology, she was also exctied to try anything that may help her son see.

As soon as Christopher put on the glasses, recalled his mom...he said, "Oh Mommy, there you are."

"He knew it was me," said Hackley.

As if by miracle, Ward saw his mother for the first time in his life when he put the ESight electronic glasses on his face.

When the 12-year-old was asked about his experience with ESight, he was so excited.

"Well when I saw my mom for the first time, she was pretty," he said.

After fighting for her son's eyesight for his entire life, Marquita Hackley broke down in tears of joy.

"I just broke down and cried. It was just amazing because he's never been able to see details like that," Hackley added.

If Chris is able to wear the glasses, he no longer will be legally blind. Unfortuately, his insurance company doesn't cover the expense of the glasses, which is a whopping $15,000!

But this mom made herself a promise, and she will not give up.

Chris's classmates have started a fundraiser to help him get the electronic glasses. Marquita Hackely is also working with their church to raise money for for her son so that he can finally have the vision he deserves.
