Weddings are often beautiful and emotional, but anyone who has planned one knows they can also come with a steep price tag.

Many couples rely on friends, family, or small contributions to help cover the most expensive parts of the celebration.

But in this case, one bride went far beyond the usual requests by deciding that every guest should pay her a $1,500 fee just to attend her wedding.

Her decision stunned the people she invited, especially once it became clear that she would not budge on the amount she wanted from them.

And when most of her guests refused to pay the large sum, she made the dramatic choice to cancel her wedding entirely.

The move left many people shocked and confused, especially after she explained her reasoning online.

Internet reacts to bride canceling wedding

People online were taken aback by her posts, and many shared strong opinions after reading what she had to say about the situation.

One wrote: "This speaks volumes about her. If she loved him and I mean truly loved him, she would have been happy with something small and intimate. She's a selfish self-absorbed woman who deserves every bit of the pushback she got."

Another person agreed and said: "When you invite families and friends to a wedding, they come to share the happy event with you, they are not expected to finance the event!"

While someone else added their own take and commented: "It's her wedding so she can pay for it, not the guests. Lucky escape for this guy!"

Why the bride canceled her wedding

The bride, a Canadian woman known only as Susan, later went online to explain why she made such a controversial decision.

She said she had a very specific vision for her dream wedding and was determined to make it happen.

According to her posts, the celebration she had planned was estimated to cost around $60,000.

Because the amount was far more than she and her fiancé could afford, she expected the guests to help cover the bill.

To reach that amount, she decided to split the cost among the guests and asked each of them for a $1,500 contribution.

She insisted that this approach made sense to her and believed others would understand.

But when she shared the idea, most of the guests thought the request was unreasonable, and they made it clear they would not be paying her fee.

And when the guests made it clear that they would not be covering the cost for her event, Susan reacted by abruptly canceling everything.

Her posts suggested she felt deeply betrayed and overwhelmed, and she blamed the guests for not helping her pay for the wedding she envisioned.

Canceling the wedding

Susan wrote on Facebook: "Dear friends, it comes with great sadness that I am announcing the cancellation of the wedding. I apologise for cancelling only four days beforehand."

"Unfortunately, [fiancé] and I have broken up due to some recent and irreparable problems. We have decided to end our relationship and not go forth with any future proceedings."

"I specifically, I mean specifically, asked for cash gifts. How could we have our wedding that we dreamed of without proper funding?"

"We'd sacrificed so much and only asked each guest for around $1,500. We talked to a few people who even promised us more to make our dream come true."

Susan continued: "Our request for $1,500 for all other guests was not f***ing out of the ordinary."

"Like, we made it clear. If you couldn't contribute, you weren't invited to our exclusive wedding. It's a once-in-a-lifetime party."

Susan explained that as the planning reached a breaking point, her fiancé tried to help by suggesting they skip the expensive ceremony altogether and elope instead.

He thought a simple marriage would save them from the stress and cost they were facing.

She concluded: "I laughed in his face, but he was dead serious. He wanted those cheap, filthy, w****-like Vegas weddings. I mean WHAT the f***?? Was he out of his mind?"

"My ex left the room and didn't apologise for his horrid suggestion. I then called my maid of honour and cried my eyes out. Instead of sympathy, I was told that I was asking for way too much and I should stick to the budget."

"How could someone who offered me thousands of dollars then deny me my promised money and then tell me to shift down my budget? She knows my f***ing dream was a blowout wedding."

"I just wanted to be a Kardashian for a day and then live my life like normal. I called her a filthy f***ing poor excuse of a friend, and hung up."
