In 2024, it seems like everything's more expensive, including getting hitched.
But one couple decided to take it to another level by asking their wedding guests to actually pay to attend their big day.
And we're not just talking about chipping in for a train ticket or a budget flight; they were asking for a cool CA$1,500 (about US$1,200) per person.
However, this bold move didn't quite pan out as they'd hoped.
Only eight guests agreed to cough up the cash along with their RSVPs.
Given how the cost of pretty much everything is going through the roof, it's not shocking that most of their would-be guests didn't have an extra $1,200 just lying around for attending a wedding.
The bride was pretty upset about the whole situation, and things went from bad to worse.
Eventually, the wedding got called off, and the couple split over the whole mess.
I mean, no one really wants to say "I told you so," but the breakup almost seems to prove the point of everyone who thought paying to attend the wedding was a bit much.
The bride, who goes by Susan online, took to social media to let everyone know about the cancellation and the breakup.
She posted: "Dear friends, it comes with great sadness that I am announcing the cancellation of the wedding."
"I apologise for cancelling only four days beforehand. Unfortunately, [fiancé] and I have broken up due to some recent and irreparable problems."
"We have decided to end our relationship and not go forth with any future proceedings."
Despite the backlash, Susan didn't back down about asking for money.
She was pretty straightforward, saying: "I specifically, I mean specifically asked for cash gifts."
"How could we have our wedding that we dreamed of without proper funding?"
"We'd sacrificed so much and only asked each guest for around $1,500 [Canadian]."
She also mentioned: "My maid of honor pledged $5,000 [Canadian] along with her planning services."
"We tearfully thanked and accepted. My ex's family offered to contribute $3,000. So our request for $1,500 for all other guests was not f***ing out of the ordinary."
"Like, we made it clear. If you couldn't contribute, you weren't invited to our exclusive wedding. It's a once and a lifetime party [sic]."
So, according to Susan, since some close friends and family were generous with their contributions, it was only fair to expect the same from all the guests.
And why did they want such a pricey wedding?
Well, a psychic told them to go for it.
Susan explained their thinking: "Since our love was like a fairytale, we wanted an extravagant blow-out wedding..."
"A local psychic told us to go with the most expensive option, and we thought why the hell not?"
They were all set to drop about CA$60,000 on their wedding.
But hey, looking on the bright side - at least they saved on divorce costs.
