After pleading guilty to charges of possessing Russian drugs, WNBA player Brittney Griner was given a nine-and-a-half-year term. Griner's wife has now addressed the verdict in public for the first time.
Brittney Griner's Wife Cherelle Worried About Wife's 9-Year Sentence Ahead Of Appeal Trial
Brittney Griner's wife Cherelle is speaking out for the first time about her wife's protracted imprisonment in Russia, where Brittney was given a nine-year prison sentence.
In an interview with Gayle King, Cherelle discusses the multitude of feelings she is experiencing as she waits to learn the verdict of her wife's case.
According to the White House, President Joe Biden had a private meeting in the Oval Office on September 18 with Cherelle.
A statement from Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reveals the discussions were made to "reiterate his continued commitment to working through all available avenues to bring Brittney home safely."
A deeply personal tale is at the heart of the media hype around Brittney's extended captivity. Cherelle and Brittney have known each other for a long time, supporting one another through law school and Olympic victories.
They can no longer communicate clearly, and Cherelle seems to be left with nothing to do but think about and worry about the person she loves most in the world.
In a sneak peek of the interview, Cherelle confesses "I'm like, in no world did I ever thought, you know, our president and a foreign nation's president would be sitting down having to discuss the freedom of my wife," Cherelle told King in her first interview since Griner's sentencing. "And so to me, as much as everybody's telling me a different definition of what BG is, it feels to me as if she's a hostage."
"Exactly, this is my life, and so I'm sitting there like, 'Do we get her back? Do I ever get to see my wife again? Like, what happens [next]?' The fact that everything is so unprecedented and everything is like, changeable, I think is a really good word," Cherelle added. "I feel like every day I'm hearing something new, and so it's just... it's terrifying."
She continues, saying that she is afraid because similar situations typically don't have happy endings in movies. They may never get to see their loved ones again.
