When Colleen and Chris Otcasek purchased a new house in Woodland Hills, California, they had no idea what they were really buying. Sure, they got the walk-in closets, the stupendously appointed kitchen, and the grand dining room that they had been looking for: but there was something else on the property.
It was a secret that stretched back to the 1960s, and it would prove to be every bit as valuable as anything in the new house itself…
Colleen and Chris Otcasek purchased a home in Woodland Hills, California this year.
They knew when they purchased the home that there was something strange about it. In the back yard, there was a hole.
And inside that hole was a ladder.
And down that ladder? A fallout shelter, built by one of the building's previous owners.
Amazingly, it was fairly well preserved.
The shelter was built sometime in the 1960s and contains a number of products from the era.
That includes food, of course.
Including plenty of coffee; the shelter's potential residents couldn't imagine a post-apocalyptic future without the occasional cup of Joe.
The shelter's builder was Alvin Kaufman, a nuclear engineer.
It's about 15 feet below ground level, and Kaufman obviously hoped it'd be deep enough to protect his wife and children.
There was also a first aid kit and various other supplies.
That included board games; after all, you've got to do something to pass the time in the apocalypse.
There were also plenty of science fiction novels.
Kaufman had also reportedly offered to build similar shelters for his neighbors...who refused. We think that they made a mistake; this is pretty awesome!
