Ashley Robinson lost 26 pounds in just one week, yet doctors kept telling him there was nothing to worry about.
Man Diagnosed With Cancer Months After Doctors Ignored His Symptoms, Saying He Was ‘Too Young’
As Ashley Robinson was preparing for one of the biggest moments of his life - his wedding - he started noticing some troubling health issues. But when he sought medical advice, his concerns were brushed aside.
The 35-year-old experienced an alarming weight loss of 26 pounds in just one week. It wasn’t until his wife desperately insisted that doctors take another look that they finally diagnosed him with stage four bowel cancer. By that time, the cancer had spread to his liver, and doctors found a tumor the size of an orange in his colon.
Last July, Robinson married his longtime partner, Jasmin. But the months leading up to the wedding were anything but smooth. He was working grueling 60-hour weeks as a chef, determined to save up for their dream wedding.
Then, two months before the big day, he started experiencing a frightening symptom - he was passing what he described as "In June, it started getting worse, and I rang my GP but they said that it wasn't serious, told me not to worry and that it would pass in a week or so,"
"I told them that it had already been going on for a month but they just said to leave it another week."
At first, Robinson believed stress was the culprit. With so much going on in his life, he admitted that he didn’t pay as much attention to his symptoms as he probably should have.
But soon, things got worse. "It got really bad and I passed the most insane amount of blood so I phoned my GP and they told me to go to A&E (the UK version of the ER) straight away."
"When I saw the doctor I mentioned to him that my great nan had died of colon cancer but he said there was no chance and that I was too young."
"I went home with medication and took that for two weeks but nothing changed."
Despite these alarming symptoms, Robinson was repeatedly reassured by doctors that there was no reason to worry. With his bachelor party coming up, he decided to push his concerns aside. After all, every medical professional he had spoken to told him he ‘definitely didn’t have cancer.’
"They were saying 'you're fine, don't worry, go and get married' so I took their word for it," Robinson recalled.
After the wedding, his health continued to decline, and he knew something wasn’t right. Losing 26 pounds in such a short amount of time was no small thing.
"I went back to my GP. I rang them three or four times and they wouldn't see me. They said there was nothing wrong with me or that it was just piles," Robinson said.
"My wife went down there while I was at work. She stormed in there and forced them to see me."
"They got me in but my GP said they still didn't think I had cancer, but they put me forward for a colonoscopy. That's when they found a tumour the size of an orange in my colon."
Robinson shared the devastating moment he learned what was really going on: "I was dreading getting the [biopsy] results back. I was told I had stage 4 colon cancer, which had spread to my liver. It was the worst news possible."
"It's so hard to put into words the hammer blow, it absolutely crushed my wife. Aside from it happening to her, it was the worst possible news I ever could have had."
