Alan Rickman, David Bowie & More: The Saddest Deaths Of 2016
2016 may have only just begun, but sadly, we've already mourned more than enough tragic deaths to last us the whole year. From David Bowie to Alan Rickman, here's a look at the famous faces we've had to say goodbye to in 2016 thus far.
David Bowie
The most shocking death of the year thus far was without a doubt the passing of rock n' roll legend David Bowie. The British icon passed away on Jan. 10 at the age of 69 after suffering through a difficult 18-month battle with cancer. David is survived by his wife of 23 years, model Iman, as well as his two children, Alexandria "Lexi" Zahra Jones and Duncan Jones.
Here one of his last photographs, published on his birthday, January 8th 2016.
Alan Rickman
The U.K. lost another beloved celeb with the tragic passing of legendary actor Alan Rickman on Jan. 14. The British acting icon, best known for his role as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter movies, also died at the age of 69 after going through his own cancer battle. Alan, who played Professor Snape in all eight of the Harry Potter movies, first made headlines on the big screen when he starred as the evil Hans Gruber in 1988's Die Hard. He was notorious for playing villains in movies, including Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Rasputin, but was loved by fans all the same. Following his death, Daniel Radcliffe paid a heartbreaking tribute to the actor in which he referred to Alan one of the "most loyal and most supportive people" in the industry, while Emma Watson said she was "so lucky" to work with him.
Rene Angelil
Celine Dion‘s husband Rene Angelil also lost his decades-long battle to cancer on Jan. 14. The music manager who discovered and would later marry the gifted singer tragically passed away at the family's home in Las Vegas surrounded by his family and loved ones at the age of 73. After managing Celine for over 30 years, Rene had to resign in 2013 due to his declining health he was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998. As he continued treatments, Celine even suspended her Las Vegas residency to take care of her ailing husband. As his final hours approached, Celine assured her husband that he'd die in her arms, calming his fears in his time of need while forcing herself to remain strong, despite her fear of losing him. Rene is survived by Celine and their three sons René-Charles, Eddy, and Nelson.
Dan Haggerty
Not even 24-hours later, Dan Haggerty, one of Hollywood's most beloved TV actors from the 70s and 80s, also passed away after going through his own heartbreaking cancer battle. Dan first discovered his cancer after undergoing back surgery for a constant pain he was having. Unfortunately, the cancer was already too far along at that point, making Dan's illness untreatable. Dan was best known for playing the Grizzly Adams on his hit 1977 TV show,The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, who was best friends with a grizzly bear. He also starred on CHiPs and Charlie's Angels.
Glenn Frey
The rock world suffered another major loss on Jan. 16 when The Eagles's founding memberGlenn Frey tragically passed away at the age of 67. The rock n' roll hitman died of complications due to ongoing intestinal issues and pneumonia. The band announced the sad news on their website, saying that, "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our comrade, Eagles founder, Glenn Frey, in New York City on Monday, January 18th, 2016. Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia."
In addition to his amazing work with The Eagles, he also contributed music to such films Beverly Hills Cop, Ghostbusters II, Thelma & Louise. The multi-talented singer also dabbled in acting on TV's Miami Vice, Nash Bridges and HBO's Arli$, and had a small role working with Tom Cruise in his classic film Jerry Maguire.
Abe Vigoda
Abe Vigoda, the long-surviving "Godfather" and "Barney Miller" actor, died on January 26, aged 94. Vigoda became famous for his role as the decrepit detective Phil Fish on the television series "Barney Miller", but it was the inaccurate reporting of his death in 1982 that led to a decades-long joke that he was still alive.
The actor would later say he lost out on some parts because casting agents thought he was dead. He even placed ads in Hollywood trade papers with him in a coffin to remind casting agents he was alive. But he joked about it on "Late Night with David Letterman."
Vigoda was nominated for three Emmy awards for his performance as Fish. In contrast to the very fit Vigoda, a dedicated handball player and jogger, Detective Fish complained about his aches, his pains, his bladder problems and hemorrhoids, always seeming on the verge of death.
Vigoda was married to his wife, Beatrice, for 24 years until her death in 1992. They had one daughter, Carol. He died at the New Jersey home of his daughter.
Colin Vearncombe
Colin Vearncombe, the singer of Black, has died aged 53. A simple announcement was placed on his Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon: "Colin Vearncombe. 26/5/1962-26/1/2016. A full statement will follow shortly."
Vearncombe, best known for the 1987 hits Sweetest Smile and Wonderful Life, had been in critical condition in hospital in Ireland for two weeks, following a road traffic accident near Cork airport. He had been placed in an induced coma, and last week it was announced that he had "only a slim chance of pulling through".
Vearncombe had a 35-year career in music, releasing his first single with Black, Human Features, in 1981. Black signed a major label deal with WEA in 1984, but was soon dropped. In 1985, he wrote and released the single Wonderful Life as a comment on his situation, which became a worldwide hit after it was rereleased by A&M in 1987.
Black's wife Camilla and his three sons paid tribute to the care he had received in Cork University hospital. "Colin received the best possible care from the expert and highly professional staff there and we are deeply grateful for everything they did," they said.
Black was said to have died peacefully with his family at his bedside "who were singing him on his way".
The funeral will be private one and a memorial service is being planned in Liverpool in the near future with a charity for donations in his memory to be announced.
Black's management said they were aware many people will want to celebrate his life and work. They added: "No need to laugh or cry. It's a wonderful, wonderful life."
