Celebrity Interviews That Turned Into Huge Fails
Sometimes interviews get heated over a particular topic and those are seriously the best to watch. Other times, it’s just painful to watch and we feel bad for the ones involved in the failed moment. While a lot of times it’s the interviewer who asked the awkward question, sometimes it’s the celeb who is just plain weird and their personality is too much to handle. Who knows if they were on something or that’s just who they are but they pretty much made the interview. We’re basically like, what was the interview about? We don’t remember because that awkward moment took over.
So get ready for the following interview fails below that will certainly entertain you and have you l-o-l-ing.
#1 Charlie Sheen
In the 2011 interview that launched 1,000 memes and entertained the Twitterverse throughout its news cycle, the off-the-rails actor appeared manic on Good Morning America, smoking cigarettes and bragging about having "Tiger Blood." During the 2011 multi-part interview, Sheen assured everyone that he wasn't currently on drugs and that he was "bi-winning" instead of bipolar. The polyamorous actor also happily confessed to "banging seven-gram rocks" of cocaine, and saying of less fortunate drug users (the ones that use and die), "Dyings for fools … You should've read the directions before you showed up to the party." Feel free to watch Sheen's derailment here.
What He Should Have Said: "I haven't used drugs in a month, but I'm still bouncing back from getting really wasted and tweeting a whole bunch. Have you ever drunk Facebooked? It's like that, only millions of people read my stuff, not just my college ex-girlfriend and my third cousin. I obviously lack a filtration mechanism, and I'm trying to have a positive relationship with my kids and my harem of porn star girlfriends. I know I seem a little crazy, but really, I'm just jacked up on six cases of Red Bull. Also, I've just been fired from my hit TV show. I'm taking some time to regroup. Have you seen Hot Shots! Part Deux? Major League? Remember me for that stuff, not this stuff."
#2 Harry Styles on BBC Radio
In celebration of Harry Styles' release of his debut solo album Friday (May 12), he stopped by BBC Radio 1 for an interview with Nick Grimshaw. Considering it was an interview between two good friends, naturally, there was plenty of hilarity -- but also, plenty of dirt dished.
Grimshaw essentially went through Styles' album track by track, getting some inside scoop on the meanings behind the songs. After starting off with "Carolina," the radio host couldn't help but ask about the song that has everyone buzzing.
Titled "Two Ghosts," the breakup ballad that begins with the line "Same lips red, same eyes blue/ Same white shirt, couple more tattoos" had fans thinking it was Styles' song about his most famous ex, Taylor Swift. And judging by Styles' response, his fans may have been on to something.
“I think it’s pretty, like, self-explanatory,” Harry said, sounding a little uncomfortable. “I think, y’know it’s about sometimes things change and you can do all the same things… and sometimes it’s just different, y’know?” Then Grimshaw went ahead to play the track saying, “OK, here we go. The one about Taylor Swift” and Styles goes, “Aaah noooo!” Must have been really uncomfortable for him to be reminded of his ex-girlfriend over and over again.
#3 Jenna Jameson
While promoting her new book, former adult film star Jenna Jameson gave a truly bizarre interview to Good Morning New York. Slurring her words and having trouble forming complete sentences, it’s rumored that her initial two-part segment was cut short after just four minutes when producers realized that Jameson was in no state to continue. Later, she told TMZ that she was just exhausted, but that excuse doesn’t explain her odd interview.
#4 Paul Rudd & Jason Segal
Not all stoned interviews are complete disasters. A few years back, Paul Rudd and Jason Segal were making the rounds for their movie I Love You, Man, and one of their interviews went viral. Watching these two clearly stoned while laughing and goofing around for seven minutes might just be the pick-me-up you need. These two are funny guys normally, but adding marijuana to the mix just seems to make them more hilarious.
#5 Madonna on Letterman
This infamous 1994 interview is bad from the moment it starts. Madonna hands Letterman a pair of her underwear, and then proceeds to inquire, “Why are you so obsessed with my sex life?” The real fun begins at the 3:03 mark when Madonna calls Letterman “a sick fuck.” She then decides to tell him that “money has made you soft,” asks him to smell her underwear that she gave him, criticizes him for “always fucking with me on the show,” disses his hair, and curses more than ten more times throughout the twenty-minute clip.
#6 Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman
When Joaquin Phoenix appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman back in 2010, he was pretty clearly under the influence of something. Letterman, never one to let an opportunity slip by, goaded Phoenix on for the whole interview by asking about his hip-hop career, his retirement from acting—to which Letterman noted, “Looks like you’re taking a little time off tonight”— and other seemingly normal questions. Phoenix gave embarrassingly short answers and at one point even asked “What do you have them on?” in reference to the audience who was laughing at Phoenix’s current state.
Perhaps the most uncomfortable part of the interview comes when Letterman is unable to set up a clip from his new film, leading Letterman’s sidekick, Paul Shaffer, to laugh uncontrollably and Phoenix to exclaim, “Are you fucking kidding? Are you serious with the maniacal laughter?” It’s all topped off quite nicely when Letterman ends the interview by saying, “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.”
#7 Tom Cruise on Oprah
Who could forget Tom Cruise losing all chill while talking to Oprah about then girlfriend Katie Holmes? The iconic couch jumping moment from 2005 is shown above, but the whole interview is worth checking out for Cruise’s contagious energy, larger than life personality, and Oprah’s stunned reaction to the whole thing.
#8 R. Kelly
"When you say teenage girls, how old are we talkin'?"
Although his remix to "Ignition" is hot and fresh out the kitchen, Kels got himself into a massive amount of PR trouble in a 2008 interview with BET. The reaction from the interviewer is priceless, and the singer spent the next five minutes making it much, much worse.
What He Should Have Said: "No." Also? He should have meant it. Get some help, R. Kelly. Get some help.
#9 Gary Coleman
In this 2010 interview with the panel of The Insider, the late Gary Coleman was asked about domestic violence issues with his wife. What followed was a little man getting defensive in a big way, dropping the F-bomb thither and yon. "Walk off a plank and drown yourself in the ocean," he yells, also saying, "You're a f—ing asshole. You can go f—yourself," before storming out of the interview.
What He Should Have Said: Anything besides "walk off a plank." Pirates were so 2009.
#10 David Cross
Always nice to know we live in a world where unprofessional drunkards can get the attention of stars. David Cross agreed to an impromptu interview from bottom feeder Gordon Downs ("but my real name is Senator Drinks-A-Lot") and proceeded to be the victim of an awkward five-minute train wreck. Good thing it's on video. Downs talks at Cross, reading him some of his press and rarely asking questions, while Cross gets increasingly impatient (but maintains his cool). The interviewer burps and continually refers to the fact that he's three sheets; he talks about Coachella and shows the comedian pictures of himself with other famous people. And big ups go to David Cross — at the end of the interview, he swipes his personal cell phone number from Downs' notes.
What Downs Should Have Done: Stayed at the frat party and name-dropped that some comedian retweeted him once. Or take a cold shower. Or apologized to his family for being such a priceless disappointment.
#11 Dan Walker
If there’s any broadcaster who has had bad luck in the industry, it’s Dan Walker for BBC. The poor reporter went through a few awkward moments during the Rio Olympics deployment where he tried playing it off like a pro. The funny thing is it’s not like he went through these moments during completely different broadcasts, it was the same coverage. Walker first got interrupted by a random guy urinating in the sea followed by being harassed by a Brazilian hen party live on air and then finally, he was joined unplanned by this couple hooking behind him while reporting. “They’re having a hug. They’re reading a book… in a strange pose,” Walker tried making a save. At this rate, he was probably just accepting the fact that he was cursed in the broadcast industry and will just go with it from then on.
#12 Nicole Scherzinger
You know it always gets hot during The Wendy Williams Show. It was no different when singer, Nicole Sherzinger, stopped by and got asked about her breakup with Lewis Hamilton. Things got a little awkward when the host started talking a bit too much on the subject. “I was saying, truth, because you’re 37, this is a woman who spent seven years of her life breaking up and getting back together,” Wendy said calling Hamilton “really wealthy.” “Poor us because THEY can have babies whenever they want. Those are seven years you can never get back and he was really wealthy. I was rooting for you, girl. I’m sorry to hear about that.” Nicole just sat back and let the host blabber but you can tell on her face that she wasn’t pleased about those comments but she did respond as cordial as possible.
#13 Robert Downey Jr. and Krishnan Guru-Murphy
When celebs get asked for personal answers, tension can stir up really fast. So when Krishnan Guru-Murphy’s interview with Robert Downey Jr. went to the personal direction, things turned left. Krishnan asked the actor to explain his interview with New York Times five years ago. Downey seemed like he didn’t want to go there answering with, “I could pick that apart for two hours and be no closer to the truth than giving you some half-arsed answer right now. I couldn’t even tell you what a liberal is.” But then Krishnan decided to upset the actor even more by asking him how his relationship is with his father. He then stood up and said, “I’m sorry, I really don’t… what are we doing?” Downey then walked away while still talking and said, “It’s all getting a bit Diane.”
#14 Chloe Mafia
People were cringing when they watched Chloe Mafia’s interview on CBB with hosts, Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes. Holmes went on to scold the Big Brother star for her decision to date Bear. “He is a controller and you fell for it. He controlled you,” Holmes said. The interview then turned really awkward and the audience could smell the tension. Chloe replied by defending herself and her choices. “He did ask me to wait for him – we’ve got plans,” she told the hosts. “He said we would go away for a few days when he gets out.” But that didn’t shut Holmes up as he continued slating her. “You appeared to be doing more than kissing. You weren’t having a wee. You must have had terrible constipation with all those groans.” As you can imagine, Chloe was just in awe at the interview failed moment.
#15 Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence is such a character and we all know that. So she decided to joke around and do her own awkward interview during a set for her promotional tour for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. She turned the joke on Ian Hecok when he was actually trying to prank her but the tables turned on him. She started giving him the most awkward answers to his questions and was even acting in a weird fashion. It was hysterical to watch the actress and the interviewer prank each other and wait who was the ultimate prankster of the two. In the end, Lawrence took the crown because the look on Hecok’s face was priceless. The actress was accompanied by her co-stars, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth along with SMOSH fan, Dylan Miceli-Nelson.
#16 Kourtney Kardashian on Today Extra
When the Kardashian reality star went on Australian TV show, Today Extra, things got pretty awkward when a question went unanswered. Sonia Kruger and her co-host, David Campbell, had to ask Kourtney Kardashian about the terrifying robbery that happened to her sister Kim in Paris last year. So they decided to ask and then coincidentally after she got the question, someone backstage started talking to Kourtney and she went blank as if it was on purpose in order for her to avoid answering the question. The two hosts asked, “did we lose you?” a number of times but the brunette wasn’t giving them anything. Campbell just spilled it out saying, “I think she’s totally blanking me on that question. She could just say her sister is fine!” Then Kruger tried explaining perhaps it was a PR person telling Kourtney not to answer the question. This all sounds way too shady if you ask us.
#17 Justin Bieber
Plenty of women would love to get hit on by Justin Bieber, but not TV host Chelsea Handler. And especially not when he was just 16 in February 2011. "He was trying to flirt with me, and it was so uncomfortable," she said after Justin told her on air "you look very beautiful".
"That's his shtick like he would come on and flirt with you, and you just felt like a child molester right away – and I was like, 'I don't want to feel that way.'" She says – after she joked about the pair being in a relationship together during the interview.
#18 Michael Parkinson
When somebody has interviewed over 2,000 people, it's quite the feat being the worst. Meg Ryan managed it, though, when Parky called her a "twerp" after having her on his BBC show Parkinson in October 2003.
Aside from the fact she gave an awkward and defensive interview, and told him to "wrap it up", she was rude to fellow guests Trinny and Susannah, and was even caught in her dressing room making her entourage stand at the other end of the room, facing away from her.
"I started looking at her and thought, 'I don't like you very much,'" said Michael. "And she was looking at me thinking, 'I don't like you very much.'" Wait, isn't this the plot to a Meg Ryan movie?
#19 Vanilla Ice
In this old interview from an MTV show with Denis Leary, Jon Stewart, Janeane Garofolo, and Chris Kattan, Vanilla Ice (wearing a garish Dr. Evil shirt) goes crazy with a baseball bat and completely wrecks the set — ostensibly to demonstrate his frustration with his only hit "Ice Ice Baby". Chris Kattan wins the comedy prize among his funny cohorts, deadpan yelling, "No, Vanilla!"
It wouldn't make for good TV, but What Vanilla Should Have Said: "Let's talk about something else, please. I'm frustrated with the fact that this small exemplar of my huge catalog of work is the only thing by which I'm known. I just want to be remembered as a serious artist, because that's exactly what I am. A super serious artist. Haven't you heard? To the extreme, you guys, I rock a mic like a vandal. Seriously — light up that stage. You will definitely be seeing me jump like a candle. Just take a look at this Dr. Evil shirt and flat top! How come America doesn't get that I'm such a totally serious artist?!" Alternatively, he could have performed "Ice Ice Baby", cashed his check, and called it a day. That's all the people really want, Rob. Give the people what they want.
#20 Kanye West
Oh, 'Ye. Can't you dial down the arrogance for Matt Lauer? In a 2010 Today Show interview, the rap star is seen quieting people off-camera, having shifty eyes, and inexplicably answering questions related to his charge that George W. Bush is a racist. After the fact West went on a characteristic all-caps Twitter rant against the beloved journalist and the experience, and threatened never to speak to the press again.
What He Should Have Done: Never speak to the press again. That would be fine, just fine.
