A young child has been praised for their courage after taking quick action that may have saved their mother’s life when heading to school one morning.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday, September 24, the student unexpectedly became their mother’s rescuer after quietly asking for help.

The first-grade student, whose name has not been made public, managed to help their mother escape from a dangerous situation through an extraordinary act of bravery.

Attending Sumner-Fredericksburg School in Fayette County, Iowa, the child slipped a handwritten note into the hands of their school bus driver, prompting an immediate response.

The note was passed to the driver at around 7:24 a.m., and only minutes later deputies rushed to the family’s rural home in Westgate, Iowa. Authorities have since confirmed that 29-year-old Glenroy Stefand Miller has been charged with multiple offenses (Fayette County Sheriff’s Office).

Investigators learned that the child’s mother had been held captive inside the home by Miller.

He was arrested shortly after and now faces domestic abuse assault charges, along with accusations of interfering with emergency calls after allegedly seizing the victim’s phone.

The note itself contained only two words, but they carried a powerful message: ‘Call 911’.

It was later revealed that the desperate message had been written by the mother, as she had no safe way of calling for help while the suspect was present in the home.

After Miller was taken into custody, investigators pieced together what had happened overnight. They confirmed that the victim had endured repeated assaults, including being kicked so violently that two ribs were broken and a lung was punctured.

In a Facebook statement, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office described the ordeal in harrowing detail: "At one point Miller started to take her to the hospital and then turned around and forced her home after realizing he would go to jail if he did. Miller continued to assault the victim throughout the night, causing serious injuries and threatened to kill her by holding a knife to her throat and wrists."
