Experiencing a severe earthquake is bad enough, but a video showing a group of divers caught in the event underwater has really freaked a lot of people out.

When it comes to certain natural disasters, it’s clear that mother nature means serious business.

We’ve all seen the devastating impacts of volcanic eruptions, tornadoes, and tsunamis, and thanks to the internet, most of us are quite familiar with what these events look like.

While plenty of us have watched footage of earthquakes on land, not many have seen what an earthquake looks like from beneath the ocean’s surface.

The footage shows multiple scuba divers swimming amongst a coral reef, everything looks fine and dandy and rather scenic before the earthquake. Literally_black1984 / Reddit

That is, until now.

A recently shared video on social media has many Reddit users confessing they've discovered a new fear.

Since its posting on the interestingasf*** subreddit, the video has already garnered over 16,000 upvotes

The footage captures a group of scuba divers exploring a coral reef, which initially appears peaceful and picturesque.

However, the scene dramatically shifts when the earthquake begins, causing sediment and debris from the ocean floor to dislodge from the corals and rise up, creating a cloud that resembles a frightening mist.

The divers can be seen grasping onto the corals as the waters stir more violently and fish start swimming more erratically.

The video also mentions that the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2.

"Yeah, that is a nightmare for sure," commented one Reddit user.

"Damn! I thought it was bad on land. Underwater looks absolutely terrifying," another added.

"Corals are sharp as glass, and being that close to the ocean floor during the earthquake could shred you pretty bad," a third user noted.

"Holy cow! The thought of people deep under water during an earthquake never crossed my mind. This vid is such an eye opener," another expressed.

The video also claims that the earthquake magnitude was 7.2 Literally_black1984 / Reddit

However, there were some users who felt they would prefer to experience an earthquake underwater rather than on land.

"I suppose it's safer in some ways? Nothing will land on you from above, right?" one user speculated.

"What I was told when I was young was that in open water, underwater is probably the safest place to be," another shared.

"That's what I was thinking; it seems the best to be free-floating underwater or in deep water with scuba gear on during an earthquake. Just don’t grab the coral like that one guy lol," a third remarked.

Other users pointed out that the diver seen grabbing the coral might have put himself in more danger instead of continuing to swim.

But let’s face it, it was probably a panic reaction—who really expects to encounter an earthquake while diving?
