The "Notorious One" made the bold decision to step up a weight division to fight Diaz, but sadly it was gamble that just didn't pay off. Soundly beaten by the bigger and taller Californian, where will McGregor's UFC career go next?

Well it seems as if a match is already being lined up, but this time back in the featherweight division, where McGregor holds the crown. Speaking immediately after the Diaz match, the Irishman identified a rematch with Jose Aldo or a clash with Frankie Edgar as his likely next move.

#2 “I know there’s a lot of people celebrating this in the featherweight division, celebrating another man’s victory,’ he said.

"I cannot understand how someone not involved can celebrate another man's victory.

"I am the featherweight world champion and if I feel it's right to go back down there and remind them of what I achieved and what I did to that division.

"I think next is to go back down and defend my featherweight crown. I still feel UFC 200 is there for me.

"I'm not cut, I'm simply heartbroken. I'll pick myself up and we'll figure it out in the morning.

"[Aldo] had an opportunity to show up and he didn't. He could be sitting where Nate is now; he was the first choice.

#3 “He said any time, any place, anywhere and then it wasn’t any time, any place, anywhere.

"Another man gets a victory over me and he celebrates it. That's the sign of a loser, that's the sign of a runner-up, not the sign of a champion.

"Frankie at least gets in there and competes. I'll keep my ear to the ground and see who the fans want to see me defend my belt against."

McGregor only accepted the fight with Diaz at 170lb after lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulled out with a broken foot, and now it seems McGregor is unwilling to tangle with a "loser". Strong words, but words that may come back to haunt him, especially as Anjos has tweeted his intent to challenge McGregor again.

With McGregor seemingly keener to fight Edgar than the Brazilian, it remains to be seen which one will take to the octagon at UFC 200. Intent on reminding the UFC fans what he achieved in the featherweight division, don't expect McGregor to go quietly into the night. This man is a fighter.
