Barry Chuwen and his partner Jenny, who won the National Lottery in 1997 and received a check for $5.6 million, have chosen to part ways after the former met someone new at work.
Couple Who Won Millions In National Lottery Split After Husband Meets Another Woman
Two of Scotland's largest National Lottery winners—a hairdresser and his wife—have decided to part ways.
When Barry Chuwen and his partner Jenny received a huge check for $5.6 million at the age of just 27, it propelled them to fame and led Chuwen to quit his job as a hairdresser to pursue a career as a real estate investor and agent.
However, it appears that their good fortune has run out, as the Daily Record says that Chuwen has admitted to "developing a relationship" with a person he met at work.
Despite the mogul's present age of 52 and his ability to amass a $36 million business, it appeared that everything fell apart in 2008 due to the credit crunch.
The Teddy Bear Foundation, a charity the couple founded to aid children with special needs and of which they are the only trustees, was also the subject of an investigation last month, according to the Sunday Mail.
Chuwen said: "We are doing everything we can to co-operate with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.”
"Discussions over this have caused a great deal of stress for Jenny and me, on top of pressures related to business and a protracted period of ill health.”
"I also acknowledge that during this difficult time in our lives, I developed a relationship with someone who I met through work.”
"I have apologized to Jenny and our children and hope to continue to be a loving father to them as they grow up."
Harvey, 15, and the girls Kelly, 17, and Lois, 21, are the couple's only children.
The couple's decision to separate requires them to give up the very opulent lifestyle they had built for themselves after buying one of Glasgow's most valued homes, a stylish house on the prestigious south side of the city.
When Chuwen and Jenny were on their honeymoon more than 20 years ago, he told friends that he had made a promise to buy it right away.
One friend admitted: "Everyone thinks winning the lottery is a guarantee of happiness but many winners know to their cost that it’s not always plain sailing.”
"Barry and Jenny have enjoyed the good times but, just like everyone else, problems can emerge that prove insurmountable.”
"They have a lovely family and have helped lots of people along the way but, unfortunately, this is one challenge they have not been able to overcome."
