A sex trend that has been gaining more and more attention recently also carries some risks, according to experts.

Many couples experiment with new trends in hopes of adding something different to their love life, and one of the more talked-about practices right now is cuckolding.

As BedBible explains: "The term 'cuckold' or 'cuckoldry' historically referred to a man whose wife has been unfaithful to him, implying that he is aware of the infidelity and possibly even complicit in it."

"In modern usage, the term is often associated with sexual fetishes involving the cuckold fantasy, in which a man (or woman) derives pleasure from his partner engaging in sexual activity with someone else while he watches or otherwise participates."

Although it may not be appealing to everyone, studies show that more people than expected have either considered or engaged in the fantasy.

Social psychologist Justin Lehmiller, author and researcher, surveyed more than 4,000 Americans about their sexual fantasies. He found that 26 percent of heterosexual women, 42 percent of non-heterosexual women, 52 percent of heterosexual men, and 66 percent of non-heterosexual men admitted to fantasizing about voyeuristic cuckolding — in other words, watching their partner have sex with someone else.

Because of its rising popularity, sex expert and author Adreena Winters, who wrote So You Want To Be a Cuckold?, has shared her insight into the benefits and risks of cuckolding.

Speaking about concerns that it could damage a relationship, Winters explained: "I get a few comments from people worried that if they do take that step, it might ruin their relationship and maybe they find someone better, but it's not the case. I've found it can strengthen the bond."

At the same time, she cautioned that this kind of exploration should only be attempted when the relationship is already strong and stable.

"It's not about replacing anybody," Winters added while expanding on her perspective.

She also pointed out that the trend is not limited to younger people, as some might assume.

"I've seen married couples with children want to get involved with cuckolding," Winters noted, before adding: "A lot of older couples introduce it down the line, especially if they met when they were quite young. They feel like they need to do a bit more exploring."

She emphasized further: "Couples need to have that connection, or cuckolding isn't that fulfilling."

"Cuckolding can also improve communication because couples need to make sure they're coming back together and having open and honest conversations."

So for those who are curious, the advice is clear — communication and trust come first.
