A man lost his temper at a sandwich bar in a popular tourist town when staff told him they had no mayo – and what followed was a shocking blaze that caused serious damage.
A man in his fifties sparked chaos after he set fire to a restaurant when his request for mayonnaise was turned down. He had ordered a "montadito" sandwich, a type of open sandwich commonly eaten in Spain, and asked for it to come with mayo.
Sitting outside on the terrace, he pressed the waitress to add ketchup or mayonnaise. She told him, apologetically, that the bar didn’t offer those sauces. The refusal led to a heated argument at Las Postas bar, located in Los Palacios y Villafranca, Seville.
The waitress tried to calm him down by explaining that the bar didn’t prepare sandwiches from scratch. They only sold them as-is, without condiments or extras. But her explanation wasn’t enough for the increasingly furious customer, who continued to argue.
After storming off, the man headed straight to a nearby gas station and returned carrying a container of petrol.
When he came back, he once again asked for sauce. After staff repeated that they had none, he suddenly splashed gasoline across the bar and set it alight, before fleeing the scene.
Security cameras captured the flames spreading quickly through the building, causing heavy damage and sending terrified customers running outside for safety.
But his escape didn’t last long. With burns on his arm, he was chased down by waiters and several customers before police arrived.
The entire ordeal was recorded on video. Spanish Guardia Civil officers caught him just minutes later, and local media reported that he already had a criminal history.
Speaking afterward, the bar’s owner expressed disbelief at what had happened, saying: "An argument or a problem can happen. But setting a place on fire because there's no mayonnaise or ketchup is unbelievable. I can't understand it."
The owner also revealed that the place had been packed with customers when the fire broke out.
Thankfully, the flames were brought under control quickly thanks to the bar’s "quick-thinking workers", who rushed to grab a fire extinguisher and put it out.
Even though no one was hurt, the financial toll has been heavy. Repairs are expected to cost around $9,000, which is a major setback for the small business.
Authorities confirmed that, despite the frightening situation, nobody was injured in the attack.
