One parent has gone to extraordinary measures to save money this winter as the cost of the living issue continues to have a significant impact on the lives of millions of people every day.

Energy conservation is more crucial than ever with the possibility of blackouts early next year.

Chavdar Todorov, 53, has, however, taken extraordinary steps in an effort to try to save as much money as he can.

Chavdar and his family realized they needed to reduce their energy consumption after seeing their bill more than double in cost to $380 per month.

Normally, you might assume that setting time limits for watching TV or turning off the lights when you leave a room would be the best course of action.

However, Chavdar has gone over and beyond to make sure his family is conserving as much money as they can in response to the high expenditures.

The family is required to use head torches instead of turning on the lights at night since the father has instituted a "no electricity at home" policy.

The headlights cost just $10.10 each, but Chavdar acknowledged he feels like they're stuck in the past.

He said: "It's like we're back in the 18th century.

"We don't know what the bill is going to be like at the end of the month so we're doing everything we can.

"I can now wear the headtorch and get around without switching on the lights.

"We're reducing our TV watching and only having it on sometimes.

"We can only do everything we can."

Along with that, the family is conserving energy by only using their heater once a week and staying warm by donning coats and blankets.

An enormous effort is being made by Chavdar's wife Moda and their two children, Teo, 14, and Nicole, 20, in an effort to reduce their yearly $4524 bill.

London resident Moda from Barnet said: "We’re trying to think positive but it’s hard.

“I don’t put the heating on if I’m home alone and just keep my jacket on.

"My husband came up with the funny idea of using head torches.

“We keep the lights off and use our head torches but it’s scary and I don’t feel as safe.

“There have been a lot of burglaries in our area.

“We light candles and try and make it romantic.”

However, Moda, a native of Bulgaria, did acknowledge that she wished the torch-bearing would come to an end.

"I hope it’s not something we’ll keep having to do," she said.
