All most children want is for their parents to be proud of them or at the very least not be ashamed of them. This father however thought letting his daughter know how ashamed he was of her on a regular basis was a great contribution to the growth of their relationship. That's why OP decided she needed to take some petty revenge.

She said that she had started working at an early age and was on a growth track at a particular restaurant chain. What was initially a part-time job became more serious once she was promoted to supervisor.

When she joined college she realized she couldn't do it all and decided to put her mental health first. She dropped out and opted for a simple life, continuing her work at the restaurant chain.

After dropping out, however, her dad started sharing his remarks telling OP to do something "more serious".

After several comments over the course of years, OP had enough and was getting tired of the arguments.

She was resentful since she had already established herself and settled at a very young age.

When she got the opportunity to move away out of state, she took it. Her father doubled down on his embarrassment and urged her to take a better job. He said he couldn't mention her accomplishments to his peers since he was embarrassed by them.

That's when he offered her $2000 if she managed to get a job that paid over $14 an hour. OP decided to play his game and win at it.

She reached out to her manager and managed to negotiate a pay rise at the very job that her father was embarrassed by. She then reached out to her father to ask for the promised $2k so she could put down a deposit on an apartment.

That's when her father started to falter and tried to go back on his word. OP played the grandma card and managed to get the money out of him.

Once she had the money, she dropped the bomb on him letting him know that she hadn't actually gotten a new job, just the raise that she had promised.

Her father demanded the money back but OP refused.

In later edits, she clarified that the story took place a long time ago and that the $14 /hr was a reasonable expectation.

She also added that she was now a manager and was doing far better at her job and had a good life.

She also added that her father had been narcissistic and abusive when she was a kid and did not regret taking the money from him.

In another edit, she clarified she never intended to take money from her grandmother but used it as a ploy to get her father to cough up.

Turns out her methods worked perfectly.

She also added that her father was the sort to make her pay for personal expenses even when she was a child.

Commenters were mostly on OP's side and applauded her cleverness in getting revenge.

They were also sorry for what OP went through with her father.

One commenter however managed to see both sides of the situation.

After several comments that mentioned how low OP's pay was, one commenter added that all that mattered was that OP was happy with her pay.
