Demi Moore stars in a new flick known as The Substance.
Demi Moore Says She 'Felt Safe' When Shooting 'Full Frontal Nudity' Scene In New Film
Demi Moore's latest movie is making waves, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart since it falls squarely in the X-rated category.
This element alone made the production phase a bit awkward.
At 61 years old, Demi Moore has amassed quite a collection of film credits, and her latest project keeps up with her trend of taking on more daring roles.
Her new movie, "The Substance," made its debut at the prestigious 77th Cannes Film Festival on Sunday (19 May), with the entire cast showing up to celebrate the premiere.
The official synopsis of the movie is intriguing: "Have you ever dreamed of a better version of yourself?
"You should try this new product: The Substance. It changed my life. With The Substance, you can generate another version of yourself: younger, more beautiful, more perfect…
"Just share the time. One week for one, one week for the other. A perfect balance of seven days. Easy, isn't it?
"If you follow the instructions, what could go wrong?"
Given its showcase at a major film festival, the cast had the opportunity to discuss the movie extensively at a press conference.
The next day, on Monday (20 May), Moore opened up about the 'vulnerable experience' she endured while filming "The Substance."
She shared with the media: "Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story.
"And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish."
Also starring in the film is Margaret Qualley, whom Moore praised for creating a secure environment on set.
Moore explained to the journalists: "I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with.
"We obviously were quite close — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were."
"But ultimately, it's just about really directing your communication and mutual trust."
"The Substance" is indeed an unusual film. In it, Moore's character undergoes a bizarre transformation into what can only be described as a humpback abomination.
Moore also commented on the oddity of seeing herself in such extensive prosthetics both during filming and at the Cannes premiere screening.
"It was very strange," she confessed, but she found solace in a humorous detail: "My dog still recognized me. It was my touchstone of reality," the actor remarked.
"The Substance" left quite an impression at Cannes, receiving a whopping 11-minute standing ovation.
In fact, the longest of the festival, according to Variety.
