The New York Times crowned Denzel Washington as the greatest actor of the 21st century in 2020, acknowledging his phenomenal career. Nonetheless, he has a couple of movies that were initially overlooked upon their release, only to later gather a devoted cult following.
Denzel Washington's Most Underrated Movie Is On Netflix
If you want a break from Christmas movies, Netflix has a Denzel Washington movie that fans think is really good, even though not many people talk about it.
Denzel Washington has been in lots of cool movies, like Training Day and The Equalizer. There's also Flight and American Gangster. You can watch these epic dramas this weekend.
If you want, you can have a whole Denzel Washington movie marathon for your weekend.
If that sounds good to you, make sure to include one of his movies from the early 2000s that fans feel should get more attention.
In the movie "Man on Fire," directed by Tony Scott, Denzel Washington plays a character named John W Creasy.
He used to work for the CIA and is hired to protect a family in Mexico City during a time when a lot of kidnappings are happening.
As the story goes, just when Creasy starts to care a lot for the young girl he's looking after (played by Dakota Fanning), she gets kidnapped by a really dangerous person.
This leads Creasy to go after the people who are responsible for the kidnapping.
The movie also stars Christopher Walken and Radha Mitchell. It first came out in 2004, but now you can watch it on Netflix. People who've seen it are suggesting that it's worth giving it a chance.
Critics haven't given "Man on Fire" the highest ratings – it only got a score of 39 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer. They say the movie is just 'average.'
But, there's a different story from the audience. People who have watched the movie liked it a lot more.
They've given it a really good Audience Score of 89 percent. Online, they've been saying a lot of positive things about the film.
On the r/movies subreddit, one fan posted: "Sat down today and watched Tony Scott's Man on Fire for the first time in years and I have to say that its absolutely fantastic."
"It encompasses his style perfectly; the acid trip cinematography, the grimy down-to-earth setting. Scott really makes you feel like you're in the heart of Mexico. And Denzel gives one of the best performances of his career in this movie."
The Reddit post continued:
"I also admired the dynamic between Denzel and Dakota Fanning; their chemistry felt natural and Scott's direction sells the emotional all the way towards its tear jerking climax."
"I know many on this sub scoff at the term "underrated" but Man on Fire truly is underrated in my book. I mean a 47 on Metacritic and a 39% on RT? Criminal."
The poster isn't the only person calling for more love for the film, with other users responding to agree.
"God this movie is so f**king awesome. Still one of my favorite Denzel movies," one wrote.
Over on X, the praise continued.
"Denzel's acting in "Man on Fire" is just so good," one fan wrote.
"He has truly subtle and vulnerable moments of caring that rises above race, gender, blood, and religion. He's struggling for redemption. What a legend."
Even though "Man on Fire" has received mixed reviews, many fans of Denzel Washington believe it's a great movie.
You can check it out for yourself on Netflix and decide which side you're on!
