In an incredibly romantic gesture, an elderly Japanese man planted a sea of flowers for his beloved wife in order to plant a smile on her face.
Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki had been married for 30 years when she was diagnosed with diabetes. Only a week later, Mrs. Kuroki lost her eyesight due to complications of the disease.
No longer able to see, she became depressed and didn't even want to leave her home. Her devoted husband then decided to make it his mission to see his wife's beautiful smile again.
That was when he decided to start planting scented flowers.
He planted and planted until there were thousands of flowers. He spent two years working in the garden of their old dairy farm in Shintomi Town, Japan, until there were more than 7,000 pink shibazakura, or moss phlox.
He chose the little pink flowers because of their lovely scent, as he said it reminded him that beauty isn't always found in appearance.
Gradually, Mrs. Kuroki emerged from the confines of her home to enjoy the flowers her husband had planted. And, she finally began smiling again.
Now, she walks through the garden every day.
They've brought countless smiles to others too.
The flowers bloom from late March to April and thousands now flock to see Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki and their famous garden.
