Diddy backtracked on his claim that he pays Sting $5,000 every day for unauthorized use of his song, clarifying that it was not true and just a joke.
Diddy Backtracks On Admission He Pays Sting $5000 Every Day
The astonishing claim that Diddy still pays Sting $5,000 every day for unauthorized use of one of his songs has been denied by the rapper.
The hip-hop legend, whose actual name is Sean Combs, sampled The Police's 1983 single "Every Breath You Take" for one of his own tracks, "I'll Be Missing You," which was released in 1997 and is widely regarded as Diddy's greatest song.
A moving tribute to Christopher Wallace, aka "The Notorious B.I.G.," the rapper's longtime buddy, the song was released.
Faith Evans, Biggie's ex-wife and the mother of his son C.J. Wallace was also featured in the song.
Well, it all began earlier this week when Diddy commented on a clip of Sting, whose true name is Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, speaking with The Breakfast Club, on Twitter.
Charlamagne the God asked the performer: "Is it true that Diddy has to pay you USD $2,000 (AUD $2,986) because he didn't ask permission to sample 'Every Breath You Take'."
"Yep," Sting shockingly revealed, "for the rest of his life."
Sumner claimed that the two are still close friends despite not getting permission before the song was released.
Then Diddy corrected the exact number he sends Sting every single day.
He tweeted: "Nope. 5K a day. Love to my brother @OfficialSting!"
Fans then pulled out their calculators to calculate the exact sum that Diddy has been owing to Sting for all this time.
Even if you are a billionaire like Diddy, the amount they posted, "Roughly 47.5 million he paid that man," is significant.
Combs, however, recently retracted his statement and claimed he was being "facetious."
"I want y’all to understand I was joking!" wrote the 53-year-old.
"It’s called being Facetious! Me and @OfficialSting have been friends for a long time!”
"He never charged me $3K or $5K a day for Missing You.”
"He probably makes more than $5K a day from one of the biggest songs in history."
And that's the story.
In response to the disclosure, a fan posted a tweet: "I love how humble you are by still explaining yourself…I gotta do better."
While another added: "Thanks for clearing that up… I was like some friend that is, he couldn’t had just asked for a lump sum…. But then again a good friend would let you owe an pay off that debt slow."
