People on TikTok have been sharing their own sweet moments with Disney cast members
It turns out that many folks are only now finding out about something called the 'Disney Hug Rule,' and plenty of them are calling it “so classy.”
For years, cast members at Disney Parks have brought beloved characters to life by stepping into the roles of everyone from Mickey Mouse to Stitch and beyond.
While dressed in character, their main role is to interact with guests — snapping photos, signing autographs, joining parades, and making the Disney magic feel real.
But here’s something not everyone knows — many of these costumed cast members also follow something known as the 'Disney Hug Rule.'
The basic idea is simple: if a child hugs a character, whether it’s on a Disney cruise or at one of the theme parks, the character isn’t supposed to let go until the child does first.
Now, this doesn’t seem to be an official written rule that’s part of any contract, but it definitely looks like something widely embraced by cast members around the globe.
The heartwarming idea of the 'Disney Hug' gained attention earlier this year after American author Simon Sinek brought it up during an episode of the popular Jay Shetty podcast.
"I learned this recently; it's the best thing in the world. At Disney, all the characters are trained that when a little kid hugs you, you may not let go until the little kid lets go first," he began.
With his voice getting emotional, Sinek said that performers should hold onto children for as long as they need — and he encouraged others to apply this same thoughtful gesture in real life.
"Now do that with a friend," he told Shetty. "Hug your fried until they let go."
Interestingly, Disney fan site Inside the Magic also backed the claim, saying the 'Disney Hug' is indeed a rule.
They went a step further and said Walt Disney himself believed in the practice, stating: "You never know how much that child may need that hug."
A video of Sinek sharing this touching story made its way onto TikTok last month and has since drawn in hundreds of emotional responses from viewers who had never heard of the 'Disney Hug' before.
"This is so classy! Can we donate to Disney?!," typed one user.
Someone else chimed in with: "I can't wait to have a kid, take them to Disney, and tell them to hug a character and don't stop no matter what."
Another person who had a similar moment while visiting a Disney park wrote: "My daughter went back for a hug like 7 times and Piglet stayed on his knees and kept re-hugging her."
"They do same for adults! Mickey motioned me to come in for a hug and I didn't release for so long—until I ultimately cried. The most unforgettable hug of my 66 years of life," a fourth user added.
Still, not everyone is convinced this is a firm rule — some are debating whether it’s something officially enforced or more of a heartfelt gesture that certain cast members choose to follow.
"As much as you wanna believe this, it's not true," one social media user penned. "Otherwise there would be kids holding on for an hour. It's nice to think it's true but it's not."
Another commenter pointed out that not all characters will return a hug.
Talking about the Evil Queen — the one from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs — a TikTok user shared: "Except the Evil Queen! She does not hug! She tells you to get off!"
So maybe the real mission isn’t just hugging Mickey — it’s getting the Evil Queen to crack a smile and actually give you a hug. Challenge accepted.
