Store-bought bone treats could make pets seriously ill and even result in death, the Food and Drug Administration has warned.
Dog Bone Treats Could Be Deadly, FDA Warns
The FDA recently received 68 reports of bone treats harming dogs, with some complaints including more than one dog injured by the treats.
At least 90 dogs were sickened and 15 others died after they were given bone treats that included Ham Bones, Pork Femur Bones, Rib Bones and Smokey Knuckle Bones, the FDA said.
The pet products known as 'bone treats', which are real bones that have been flavored, dried and packaged, can be deadly for your canine.
"Giving your dog a bone treat might lead to an unexpected trip to your veterinarian, a possible emergency surgery, or even death for your pet," said Carmela Stamper, a veterinarian at FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine.
The dogs suffered blockage in their digestive tracts, choking, cuts and wounds in the mouth and tonsils, vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding from the rectum.
Pet owners are advised by FDA not to give their dogs bones from animals/meats. These include feeding your dog chicken bones or other bones from the kitchen table, as they can cause serious injuries, too.
It is recommended that pet owners talk with their veterinarian about alternatives to giving bones to their dogs.
