#1 Painful tumor: Henry was found wandering Newport Beach on May 12, struggling with the 46lb growth

It's hard to believe that there's anyone out there who would welcome an animal into their home only to abandon it in their moment of most desperate need, but unfortunately, that's exactly happened to one beautiful 8-year-old Golden Retriever.

A golden retriever who was found dumped on a California beach struggling with a massive tumor on his side is now recovering from a life-saving surgery that removed the growth.

The dog, named Henry by rescuers, was found wandering Newport Beach on May 12.

The huge growth on Henry's ride side, which weighed 46lb, was pushing on his right leg, preventing him from walking properly or even being able to lift his leg to relieve himself.

'We got a call that a dog had been dumped on the beach, and when we got him we went, ''oh my gosh'',' Valerie Schomburg, a Newport Beach animal-control supervisor, told KTLA of the tumor.

Schomburg added: 'Most vets that we've asked and have been involved in his story have never seen it that big.'

Officials determined Henry to be about eight-years-old and believe he was a pet at some point, but was dumped by his owners.

Despite the complications involved with removing the tumor, vets decided he was strong enough to undergo surgery, which was completed on June 1.

Henry is now recovering and is doing well. He is learning to walk normally again after stumbling for so long.

'He has too much love, and life to live, that we wanted to give him a chance,' Schomburg said.

'You can't keep him down.'

The surgery, which cost thousands of dollars, was covered by donations from the public.

Henry's vets are now waiting on biopsy results to see if the tumor was cancerous and whether the dog needs to undergo further treatment.

Investigators are now looking into whether the case is one of animal cruelty and are trying to find Henry's owners.

'It's very shocking that (the tumor) got that big and that someone wouldn't do the right thing,' Schomburg said.

'Whoever did this to Henry might have to answer to it.'
