According to journalist Michael Wolffe's new expose, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Trump's hairdo is the result of scalp-reduction surgery, careful styling held in place by strong hairspray and too much cheap dye.

He continues, "The color, she would point out to comical effect, was from a product called Just for Men — the longer it was left on, the darker it got. Impatience resulted in Trump’s orange-blond hair color."

According to Spencer Stevenson, who runs hair loss advice service Spexhair.com, to people in the business of hair loss, this revelation is no surprise. "His hair has always looked so identical and staged," says Stevenson, "and it has that unnatural just-off-centre side parting. It had to be fixed in with the hairspray because the scalp is pulling it in one direction. It simply can’t go against the grain."

So what does scalp reduction - a treatment that Stevenson calls "barbaric"- actually involve?

Well, scalp reduction surgery is only really used nowadays for treating extreme cases of alopecia or traumatic burns. The purpose is to reduce the overall area of bald skin. Healthier parts of the scalp are then stretched and re-positioned, making the balding area smaller and more manageable.

A small scalp reduction can be performed under local anesthesia, and sometimes with a mild sedative to help you relax, a strip of skin ranging from two to five centimeters can be removed in one session, with the remaining skin stitched together.

Larger scalp reductions, such as cases of severe burns or traumas are instead performed in general anesthesia. In these cases, the hair transplant is performed in a second stage.

Some thought Trump's hair was a wig, but Stevenson believes that after having the scalp reduction treatment Trump must have reacted positively to Finasteride, a common medication used to fight hair loss.

Trump is arguably one of the most photographed people on the planet, making it difficult for the president to have restorative surgery without anyone noticing the difference (which would be the point) and pulling him up on it.
