Spencer Joyce opened up about his viral video documenting an exhausting delivery day
A DoorDash delivery driver has been making headlines after showing exactly how much money he earned during an intense 12-hour shift.
In a video posted to Instagram last week, Spencer Joyce revealed that he set himself a personal challenge: to accept every single order that came through on his app for an entire 12-hour stretch.
Based near Virginia Beach, Spencer said he kicked off his shift bright and early at 8 a.m., working straight through until around 9:15 p.m., as he explained in the clip that has since gone viral.
During that long day, Spencer said he was actually “active” on the app for just under 10 hours, factoring in a few short breaks in between.
Over the course of the shift, he drove an impressive 221 miles to complete his deliveries.
"My earnings before taxes, wear-and-tear, gas, insurance etc. was $215," Spencer shared.
"My biggest tip was $14.25 from a Food Lion grocery order and my smallest tip was $3 from a Starbucks order," he added.
"I'm tired as hell as my car needs a tune up badly now," Spencer said at the end of the clip.
Viewers quickly began weighing in on the results, with many shocked by how much — or how little — he made for the time and effort involved.
"Damn man, you could make more working pretty much anywhere," one person wrote.
Another viewer reacted by saying: "That's a horrible pay for 12 hours."
A third chimed in with: "I thought you were going to say between $400-$500."
Someone else pointed out: "Gotta respect the hustle but door dashing isn't to get rich. It's to get by."
In a follow-up clip, Spencer explained the long shift was actually part of an experiment for a YouTube video.
He’s one half of the reaction channel “Embrace The Suck 21.”
In another Instagram post, he told his followers: "I should qualify the context of this: I usually don't accept orders less than $6 or that give less than $1/mile and I'm multi-apping with Instacart as well."
Speaking to Unilad, Spencer opened up about the backstory: "I've done DoorDash on and off since 2019 just for extra cash, but I fell on hard times after just getting my Commercial Driver's License & having to wait a little bit to start work, which is when I had to move into my car to live and doing DoorDash and Instacart was my lifeline."
He added: "The video I did was simply a challenge for a YouTube video and I did not expect it to blow up like it did! Luckily I've secured a job as a trucker that I begin on August 11th."
