Deciding not to leave any heirs her money, savings account books and euro950,000 ($1 million) in cash were found shredded in the old lady's care home bed in Austria, after she died. State prosecutors confirmed the incident but also said that it was not a criminal matter, since the money was hers.

"If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced," said an official from Austria's central bank (OeNB). "If we didn't pay out the money, then we would be punishing the wrong people."
