Every kid who grew up in the 90s remembers spending Saturday mornings in their pajamas watching cartoons. The Powerpuff girls came out in 1998 and truly blew our minds. The show was so good that it maintained great ratings for all six seasons that the show aired. The show was about three kindergarten-aged girls who had superpowers and defended their hometown from evil-doers. If you watched the show diligently, you might think you know all there is to know about this threesome, but there are some things we discovered that not every fan would know.
Eight Facts About The Powerpuff Girls That All 90s Kids Should Know
It had the highest rated debut in Cartoon Network history
The Powerpuff Girls made their TV debut on November 18, 1998 and was the highest rated debut show in Cartoon Network's history. The show was successful through its entire six-year run. The show also had tons of merchandise that kept us excited. Not only was the show popular in the United States, but it did really well in Canada and the UK. It was truly a sad day when the show ended in 2005.
It actually won awards
The Powerpuff girls truly stole the spotlight during the early 2000s when they were nominated for various Primetime Emmys and Annie Awards. They had a total of 18 nominations and won four. The show was nominated for A Kids Choice Award, Best Voice Over Acting, Best Animated Series, and Favorite TV show. They also snagged awards for art direction, animation, music, and individual achievement.
Their eyes were from paintings.
One thing about the Powerpuff Girls that we all took notice to was their ginormous eyes.
American painter, Margaret Keane, had her artwork stolen by her husband. She worked 16 hours a day while his lazy ass sold her paintings, passing them off as his own. Because of this, he became one of the most admired painters even though none of the work was his. She eventually left him and won a defamation suit she brought up against him in federal court.
There could have been a seventh season
Even though Cartoon Network wanted another season, Craig McCracken felt that six was a long enough run for the show. He did not want the show to turn into a cash cow. He ended up leaving to work on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. That show started to air a year before The Powerpuff Girls came to an end and was a massive success until it ended in 2009.
You only see the secretary's face once.
The mayor's secretary only showed her face one time through the entire series. It was a huge deal because people were dying to see what Ms. Bellum looked like. Most people say that she was the real mayor of Townsville since she was the one who came up with most of the ideas that they implemented.
So much nostalgia
90s kids really loved nostalgia since most of our favorite shows were filled little bits of pop culture from the past. The Powerpuff girls were full of references from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.
Each girl has a unique power
Because of Chemical X, the girls had a collection of powers, but they also have their own powers that are unique to the individual on top of being able to teleport, conjure tornadoes, and creating inferno shields. Bubbles can speak multiple languages on top of having the power to create supersonic waves with her voice. Blossom has ice breath. However, Buttercup has the most disappointing power of being able to roll her tongue. At least she is humored by it.
There was a fourth Powerpuff Girl
They created a fourth Powerpuff Girl to help the other girls out. The girls snuck off to the lab in order to make themselves a new sister, but they did not get it right. Their new creation released all of the criminals from jail while throwing the cops in before she explodes because her chemical make-up was not stable.
