Even after hearing the explanation, pronouncing it isn’t any easier
Elon Musk’s son has one of the most unusual names out there, and even after hearing the young boy say it himself, it’s still hard to wrap your head around how to pronounce it correctly.
Giving children eccentric names is nothing new when it comes to celebrities. Many famous parents have taken creative liberties in naming their kids.
And while opinions about Musk himself might vary widely, there’s no denying that the man knows how to stand out. In true Musk fashion, his choice of baby name is as unconventional as you’d expect.
When Musk and his then-girlfriend Grimes revealed their baby boy’s name back in 2020, the announcement definitely turned heads.
Years later, it’s still a name that makes people do a double-take. Calling Musk’s son “one of his 12 children” might be easier for most people to manage.
In a sweet and somewhat amusing moment lastmonth, the little boy interrupted an interview Musk was having with Tucker Carlson, creating a wholesome highlight.
The child wandered into the interview, placed his toy car on the desk, and then climbed onto his father’s lap. Carlson asked him about his activities and, of course, his name.
Musk, clearly enjoying the moment, referred to his son as his “mini-me” and remarked how much his child completes him.
When Musk’s son spoke directly into the microphone to pronounce his name, it was surprisingly clear. Still, good luck trying to say it back correctly on your first attempt!
If you’re curious, you can listen to it yourself.
Musk went on to call his son by his nickname, X, and asked him if he should help President Trump. The boy enthusiastically said yes.
To be fair, the four-year-old did mumble a few things here and there that were hard to decipher. It makes you wonder if even he has a hard time with his full name.
When the name was first revealed, people couldn’t help but ask what it all meant. Grimes had previously broken it down, saying: "X stands for 'the unknown variable'."
The 'Æ' part of the name was explained as the Elven spelling of AI, which stands for artificial intelligence. Interestingly, it’s also the word for “love” in languages like Japanese.
Grimes elaborated further: "A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent."
Humorously enough, Grimes and Musk seem to have slightly different takes on how the name is supposed to be pronounced.
Grimes shared her version, saying: "It's just X, like the letter X. Then AI. Like how you said the letter A then I,"
Meanwhile, Musk offered his own interpretation during an appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, stating: "I mean, it's just X, the letter X. And then, the Æ is, like, pronounced 'Ash'... and then, A-12, A-12 is my contribution."
