Woman refuses to give her grandmother's wedding set to stepson saying it belongs in her part of the family. He demands it saying her niece would never use the jewels because she's ace.
Entitled Stepson Demands Wedding Set Already Promised To Niece
Blending families is always complicated. For OP the situation got a little more tense when it came to gifting her grandmother's heirlooms to her niece.
OP and her sister had inherited their grandmother's wedding sets with the objective of passing them on to their own daughters someday. While OP's sister had two lovely daughters, OP was unable to have children.
OP decided that the best thing to do would be to then give her band to her sister's younger daughter, thus keeping the tradition alive.
OP had since married and was now stepmother to her husband's son. The three were a close family unit considering her husband had lost his family.
OP's stepson was soon going to graduate and decided it was also time to settle down. He reached out to OP about her grandmother's wedding set despite already being offered one by his own grandmother.
He further added that he deserved OP's set since the niece who was supposed to inherit it was asexual.
OP tried to explain to her stepson that the pieces were already spoken for and that it didn't matter what the niece actually did with the set.
OP's stepson then made some disparaging comments about her niece's sexual orientation.
Things continued to escalate as OP said that the set was meant for her part of the family. This set off her husband as well who claimed that she didn't consider them part of her family.
OP stood her ground, once again saying that her niece could do what she wished with the pieces.
In an update, she explained that her husband had not said anything about the wedding set but was rather upset by the comment she made about family. She was sure that she still had his support when it came to the heirlooms.
She further added that she chose her words poorly and would be making it up to her family. She said the three had been under the influence which led to things getting heated so quickly.
She made up with her husband the next morning and the two decided to have a talk with their stepson.
Her husband understood the sentiments attached to the heirlooms.
For OP the most important thing was the disparaging remarks her stepson had made about her niece and her sexual orientation. She reiterated that the wedding set was already spoken for but that she was willing to contribute to a new piece.
She was also willing to have his own grandmother's set recast if he wanted something with sentimental value.
She also added that she didn't know if his girlfriend was aware of these demands.
When it came to her niece, OP and her husband were going to sit down and discuss that with her stepson.
Commenters were happy for OP and appreciated the approach that she took in the situation. They also called out her stepson for his entitled behavior.
Commenters also agreed that it didn't matter how OP's niece used the set. It was already meant for her from the time she was born.
