Eva Mendes Says 'It's a Team Effort' Raising Kids with Ryan Gosling: 'No Gender-Specific Roles'

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have discussed parenting and how they teach their children to defy "gender-specific" roles.

Currently, the celebrity couple has two daughters, Esmeralda, seven, and Amada, six, and mom Mendes just gave Forbes some insight into their parenting tactics.

The 48-year-old actor and entrepreneur told the outlet that the parents try to run their household as a "team effort".

 "I’m not an amazing cook - I leave that to Ryan," Mendes said. "Hopefully it’s showing my girls that there are no gender-specific roles that one must take on and that we are partners in this and that we’re all partners in this, not just Ryan and I, but our children as well."

The Hitch star continued: "If they see him and I switching off doing certain things that, again, aren’t specific to stereotypical gender things, I think that just creates balance and harmony."

Mendes and 41-year-old Gosling are believed to have first gotten together back in 2011, as the pair was spotted enjoying a day trip to Disneyland.

In fact, their love of Disney is what inspired the name of their eldest daughter, as Mendes explained in 2015:

"We love The Hunchback of Notre Dame, we loved the name – the cartoon and the novel," she said on The Wendy Williams Show, per the Daily Mail. "It just kind of kept coming back to us."

And Gosling has previously voiced his adoration for living with three females in the past.

During the actor's appearance on Good Morning America back in 2016, The Nice Guys star was asked about being outnumbered by so many women, to which he replied: "It’s Heaven. It’s like walking through a field of flowers every day. I live with angels."

Mendes has recently become the co-owner and brand ambassador for a cleaning tools company called Skura Style, which sells stylish antimicrobial sponges and a range of other products.

The Skura Style co-owner and brand ambassador, 48, told Forbes in an interview published Thursday that she's admittedly "not an amazing cook" — and she hopes that having Gosling on dinner duty sets a good example for their daughters Esmeralda, 7, and Amada, 6.

"Hopefully it's showing my girls that there are no gender-specific roles that one must take on and that we are partners in this and that we're all partners in this, not just Ryan and I, but our children as well," she told the publication.

"It's a team effort everyday, so if they see him and I switching off doing certain things that again aren't specific to stereotypical gender things, I think that just creates balance and harmony," Mendes added.

When asked by Forbes how she came into her new business venture, she revealed that she - like many others - found herself cleaning a lot more throughout the pandemic.

"I’m not a clean freak by any means but I love having a clean house, and especially a clean kitchen and a clean sink," she said. "I feel like it’s part of mental wellness for me. I was going through so many sponges and so many cleaning products and I basically found through a friend Skura Style sponges, and I instantly loved it."
