#1 AMELIA EARHART

In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first civilian to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross award. She received the award for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic ocean. Earhart had grown up flying planes with her father, but it was this event that propelled the pilot not only to stardom, but also her eventual disappearance. Earhart vanished on July 2nd, 1937 while piloting a Lockheed Model 10 Electra in an attempt at circumnavigating the globe. Forced to end their $4 million dollar search on July 19, 1937, Naval and Coast Guard relief efforts found no evidence of the missing plane. Two years later, due to a death in absentia plea, Earhart was finally declared dead.

#2 NICK STAHL

Before going on to star as the lead of Terminator 3, Nick Stahl gained fame as a child actor in The Man Without a Face. Holding the distinction of being the only celebrity on our list to go missing more than once, it's safe to say that Stahl had a rough 2012. Stahl was last reported seen in the run-down Skid Row district of L.A on May 9, documented in a missing person's report by his wife, Rose Murphy. Just over a week later, Stahl resurfaced and told friends and family that he would be seeking drug treatment at a recovery centre. Against doctors' orders, Stahl checked himself out one month after entering rehab, disappearing again. After surfacing again four days later, Stahl was placed under an Involuntary Psychiatric Hold in order to receive the full required treatment. Stahl's year took another dark turn, however, when he was arrested for the possession of Crystal Meth, despite having successfully completed rehab.

#3 RICHARD STANLEY

South African sci-fi/horror director Richard Stanley found a modicum of fame in the early ‘90s with his films Hardware and Dust Devil. Hotly debated in Hollywood as one of the next great up-and-coming directors, Stanley was given the task of shooting an updated film version of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Stanley was unable to manage the stress of his first big budget project while shooting on a remote island and, after hearing a rumor that he was to be fired, vanished into the jungle. Weeks later, crew members still working on the film under a new director found Stanely living off the grid with an aboriginal tribe. Secretly, Stanley returned to set in the guise of an animal person to watch the rest of his film get completed by the new director. Stanley not only left the island upon wrap of The Island of Dr. Moreau, but the film industry entirely, never to grace the silver screen again.

On April 2, 1994, Cobain scaled the exterior wall of the L.A. based Exodus Recovery Center after three days of drug addiction therapy. Cobain's mother filed a missing person's report, while his wife, Courtney Love, hired a private investigator to search for him. Found dead of a suicide in his Seattle home by an electrician six days later, Cobain's disappearance became an international news story. Half of the comedic duo Jay and Silent Bob, Jason Mewes is also life long friends with director Kevin Smith. Mewes became addicted to heroin upon the completion of filming Mallrats after struggling with a prior history of drug abuse. A '99 warrant for his arrest due to drug possession in California caused Mewes to disappear off the grid. Unsure of his location, news outlets reported his death more than once over the course of the next three years. After his mother's death in 2002, Mewes resurfaced and turned himself in to police officers in New Jersey. Sentenced to six months of drug rehabilitation, Mewes completed his time and resumed his troubled life in the spotlight. It wasn't until eight years later that Mewes was finally able to shake off his addictions and maintain a full sober lifestyle.

#6 MARGOT KIDDER

This Canadian-born actress is best known from her role as Lois Lane from the Christopher Reeve Superman films. Kidder's manager reported her as missing after she failed to appear for a flight in April of 1996, a time during which Kidder had been openly struggling with bipolar disorder. Highly publicized, Kidder's disappearance lasted only four days after she was found in the bushes of a Los Angeles residential back yard. Taken for treatment to the Olive View Medical Center for treatment, Kidder had been found wearing ragged clothes, covered in bruises, and in a hysterical state. Kidder announced in 2007 that she hadn't had any manic episodes for 11 years, and has since become a US citizen, gotten involved with politics, and been arrested for protesting.

#7 D.B. COOPER

The man known only as Dan Cooper hijacked Northwest Airlines #305 the day before Thanksgiving in 1971, armed with a briefcase bomb. Cooper demanded and received $200,000 from authorities before releasing all the passengers at the Seattle airport. With both pilots and one flight attendant remaining, Cooper's plane left Seattle for Portland. Forty-five minutes into the flight, Cooper donned a parachute, strapped the bank money to his chest, and jumped out of the plane. A military search party 1,000-men strong scoured the area of Cooper's flight path without ever finding a body or a parachute. Matching serial numbers on a $6,000 stack of money were found by a young boy in 1980, but it wasn't enough evidence for FBI to learn anything new about the elusive thief.
