Farmer Heroically Ploughs Field To Stop Wildfire Spreading Through Crops Towards Houses
Bill Alexander decided to intervene to try and limit the amount that could burn when he noticed that the flames were moving closer to homes in Kent.
Just before 3.15 pm on Saturday, the fire in Lenham Heath, Kent, between Maidstone and Ashford, had already destroyed about 20 acres of the lane.
It happened days after intense fires due to record-breaking heatwave destroyed homes.
Yesterday's fire in Kent was eventually extinguished without causing any injuries.
The owner of the Kent farm in the video, Andy Barr, called his "good neighbor" a "hero."
He tweeted a picture and wrote, "Please advise everyone to use caution when using roads and footpaths, 20 acres of spring barley are on fire."
‘This pic from my son was when the wind turned towards my brother’s house, luckily Bill Alexander and Jonny & Ellie from TCAgri saved the day.’
He claimed that the damage might have been far worse if Mr. Alexander had not intervened.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service said during the fire: ‘Eight fire engines, all-terrain vehicles, and a bulk water carrier have been sent to reports of a standing crop fire in fields on Lenham Heath between Maidstone and Ashford.’
‘Crews are working hard to get the fire under control, which is covering approximately eight hectares.’
‘Smoke from the fire may be visible on the M20 between junctions 8 (Leeds Castle) and 9 (Ashford), road users heading towards Maidstone are asked to take extra care.’
They said in an update at 4.50 pm: ‘The fire has been brought under control and put out. Firefighters escorted persons who were in the vicinity to safety.’
‘There are no reports of any injuries.’
