When a teacher cut her student’s hair without the parent’s permission, the child’s father was understandably outraged. The 7-year-old mixed-race child was so distraught that her father is now suing the school for $1m.
Father Suing School For $1m After Teacher Cut Biracial Daughter's Hair
Jimmy Hoffmeyer was enraged to see that his mixed-race daughter had returned from school one day with her hair snipped off.
Jurnee, his daughter had already suffered a bullying incident prior to this one where a fellow student had cut off some of her hair.
Two days after this incident, Jurnee returned from school with her hair cut even further requiring a correction which lead to her losing most of her hair.
Hoffmeyer was understandably upset and thought the culprit was once again the fellow classmate.
“I thought I told you no child should ever cut your hair.”
This was when Jurnee revealed that it was in fact her teacher that cut her hair this time.
“But dad, it was the teacher.”
The school launched a third-party led investigation where they determined that the haircut was not racially motivated. Hoffmeyer however revealed that this investigation failed to interview him or his daughter and had reached this conclusion without addressing all parties involved.
This was when Hoffmeyer decided to file a lawsuit and claims that the school “failed to properly train, monitor, direct, discipline, and supervise their employees.”
The school has responded to this lawsuit by saying, “We are confident that the facts will prevail given our district’s appropriate and aggressive response to the incident and the findings of the third-party investigation that was conducted.”
People were outraged by the behaviour on the teacher's and school's part.
"Teacher had absolutely no business making that kind of judgment on someone's child. I would have been furious. And worse, the child will remember and wonder why she was signaled [sic] out from her classmates."
Another user was surprised any teacher would make this move whether or not it was racially motivated.
"An awfully steep amount without malice. Having said that, why would a teacher take that unwarranted, unnecessary, unbelievable action? Adults today are just crazy, even the "educated." So much for higher education!"
