Experts often list long checklists of red flags, but people who’ve lived through it say the answer is much simpler
People Who've Been Cheated On Reveal The First Subtle Sign Your Partner Might Be Unfaithful
There are hundreds of articles online explaining how to spot the signs of cheating, but according to people who’ve actually been cheated on, there’s one early clue that stands out above everything else.
Finding out a partner has been unfaithful is easily one of the most painful experiences in a relationship and can shake your confidence to the core.
Because of that, many people try to catch the warning signs early so they can protect themselves or end things before the hurt gets even worse.
With so many people wanting answers, countless experts have tried to offer guidance by listing red flags or patterns they say might reveal when someone is cheating.
You’ll find everything from a private investigator’s breakdown of 20 ‘giveaway signs’ to lists of risky job roles that supposedly make someone more likely to stray.
With so much information floating around, it becomes easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure about what truly matters.
But according to Redditors who’ve lived through the experience themselves, there’s one sign that cuts through the noise.
On the subreddit r/Productivitycafe, one user asked others to weigh in by posing the question: "People who got cheated on, what were the early signs indicating that your partner might do it before they actually cheated?"
Many people replied that the most important sign is surprisingly simple: if your instincts are telling you something is wrong, you should take that feeling seriously.
Several commenters shared that the very first hint they noticed—long before they had any evidence—was their own intuition picking up that something wasn’t right.
One person wrote: "Your gut. You'll know it before you actually know you do."
Another added: "Your body and gut… before you even start to look or dig you'll feel off…"
Again, someone chimed in with: "Gut feeling. You notice something is strange about their behaviour but you don't really know what yet."
Another user mentioned watching a “PI show” where a private investigator said that everyone who hired them already had a strong feeling their partner was cheating, and the PI found they were always correct in some way.
So the question becomes: is intuition actually real?
A paper published in the National Library of Medicine titled Intuition, insight, and the right hemisphere: Emergence of higher sociocognitive functions suggests that it might be.
The 2010 study looked at whether intuition (gut feeling) and insight (understanding) could link back to specific parts of the brain, including the right hemisphere.
Through brain imaging and research across psychology and neuropsychology, the authors concluded that intuition and insight are likely real cognitive processes humans experience.
However, researchers still note that current findings are theoretical and not yet fully conclusive.
