Tom Bowey spent nearly $325 each month on soda, indulging his sweet craving with sugary drinks.
We’re constantly reminded of the importance of drinking two liters of water a day, but what if someone consumes nearly three times that amount in soda instead?
That’s exactly what Tom Bowey did, and he’s now opening up about the alarming effects this habit has had on his body.
His experience might make you think twice about indulging in sugary drinks on a regular basis.
Tom’s love for soda earned him the nickname 'Dr Pepper Man' among his friends, as he was spending roughly $325 each month on these sugary drinks.
This habit wasn’t just a small expense either.
The father of two has reportedly spent an astonishing $38,000 on Dr Pepper over the past decade, putting a massive dent in his finances.
As you might expect, Tom has dealt with a variety of health issues throughout the years due to his soda habit.
These include sleep disturbances and significant dental issues.
Living in Buckinghamshire, England, Tom has also experienced constant headaches and regular bloating, adding to his list of health concerns.
"For a while my teeth weren't too bad, but then I went to the dentist and he said the level of acid erosion was similar to what he'd expect in a 70 year-old," he said.
"I've basically got the teeth of a pensioner. I was also feeling really bloated all the time as well, you gain a lot of weight when you're just drinking sugar."
Describing how his addiction to sugary drinks first took hold, Tom shared: "It started with one [drink] with lunch and then me and my work colleagues started buying each other drinks throughout the day."
"They'd bring them over from the cafe near work. There was also a vending machine so I could just pop in and get them whenever I wanted."
"Before I knew it, that's all I was drinking and then I stopped drinking water completely."
The British soda lover continued, explaining: "I used to buy the 24-can multipacks, so I always had them and had at least five cans in the fridge all the time."
"I'd have my first one as soon as I woke up, and I would always take a can with me for the drive to work as well."
"I'd buy two bottles before I got into work from the shop for the morning, then I'd have another two in the afternoon."
"Then when I went home I would drink more throughout the evening before I went to bed."
As his waistline continued to grow, Tom realized he had to make some big changes in his life.
This realization led him to try hypnotherapy as a way to kick his soda habit.
Now, instead of sugary drinks, Tom reaches for water or a mild squash when he needs something to drink.
After a two-hour Zoom session with Dr. David Kilmurry, Tom was able to quit his soda habit entirely.
"I don't look at fizzy drinks, I'm not remotely tempted," he said.
