At the 2022 Oscars, Will Smith got in a fight with Chris Rock and got banned for ten years. Floyd Mayweather supported him with daily calls, and in December 2023, Jada Pinkett-Smith said the incident actually helped save their marriage.
Floyd Mayweather Called Will Smith EVERY DAY For Ten Days After Chris Rock Oscars Slap To Call Him ‘The Champ’
After Will Smith hit Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, Floyd Mayweather contacted the actor every day for ten days.
After slapping Rock live on stage, Smith was banned from the Oscars for ten years because of a joke the comic made about the Hollywood star's wife, Jada Pinkett.
Smith was made to apologize for his acts, and he went on to win an Academy Award that night.
And he disclosed that boxing legend Floyd Mayweather attempted to console him during a difficult time he was going through after the event.
In a video TMZ Sports was able to secure, Smith stated: “I want to say something also about Floyd.”
“So, we’ve met each other, we’ve seen each other around, but we weren’t like, friends.”
"And, the day after the Oscars, for ten days he called me every day.”
“And, he was like, ‘Ay, you know you the champ, right? You good? You know you the champ, right? I want you to hear my voice say it'.”
“That was every day he called me … and it’s like, that’s my dude forever right there.”
Smith, famous for playing Muhammad Ali in 2001, later issued a public apology to Rock.
He said: "I am human and I made a mistake and I'm trying not to think of myself as a piece of s**"."
In December 2023, Pinkett-Smith said that the incident actually helped save her marriage after they had separated in 2016.
She told the Daily Mail: “I nearly didn’t even attend the Oscars that year, but I’m glad I did.”
“I call it the 'holy slap' now because so many positive things came after it. After all those years trying to figure out if I would leave Will’s side, it took that slap for me to see I will never leave him.”
"Who knows where our relationship would be if that hadn’t happened?”
The 2022 Oscars got kind of crazy, but guess what? It turned out to be a starting point for making things right, finding support, and growing personally.
Will Smith said sorry in public, Floyd Mayweather became an unexpected friend, and Jada Pinkett-Smith revealed something important. All these pieces together showed how people can bounce back and change.
That wild night's impact went beyond just Hollywood. It reminded everyone that, even when things get tough, you can turn things around and make positive changes.
