The scene, which has warmed the hearts of many, showcases the deep bond between the two.
Wangwang, an eight-year-old German shepherd, formerly worked as a sniffer dog at security checkpoints in Xichuan county, Henan province, in central China.
She retired in June 2019 and was adopted into a forever home, resulting in a separation from her handler, whom she had formed a close connection with.
While patrolling a neighborhood near Wangwang's new home, her former handler decided to surprise her with an impromptu visit.
The Xichuan Police shared a video of this reunion on their Douyin account – the Chinese equivalent of TikTok.
In the video, the officer can be heard calling out for Wangwang outside his house.
Upon hearing her handler's voice, Wangwang rushes out, excitedly darting through the front door and into his arms.
The video shows her affectionately rubbing against his legs and appearing to cry, unable to hide her joy.
Even as the patrol unit prepares to leave, Wangwang, demonstrating her loyalty, refuses to let them go and sits beside her handler.
The police service's post accompanying the video reads:
"Wangwang's hair is turning white but she is well fed, she is getting fat. It is always hard to bid farewell to your buddy."
Viewers of the video were deeply moved by this heartfelt reunion.
One viewer commented, "The dog is welling up. Dogs are really loyal companions, please treat her well!"
Another added, "You can tell how much Wangwang misses her handler. You can understand when the dog greets you belly up."
The video also sparked questions among viewers as to why Wangwang couldn't stay with her handler after retirement.
In response, the Xichuan Police explained, "Police dogs are generally well fed at the training centre but our officers could not dedicate their time to play or exercise with retired dogs. They will be better looked after in a suitable family than staying in the training centre."
This reunion video not only shows the unbreakable bond between Wangwang and her handler but also highlights the care and consideration given to retired police dogs to ensure they have a comfortable and loving home post-retirement.
