Mary Austin addresses claims about a so-called secret child fathered by Queen legend Freddie Mercury
Mary Austin, the woman Freddie Mercury famously described as 'the love of his life', has spoken out about new claims suggesting the Queen frontman fathered a secret child. She has firmly rejected the idea, saying it is simply not believable.
Now 74, Mary has broken her silence following early excerpts from an upcoming book titled Love, Freddie. The book, which draws on supposed diary entries by both Freddie and the alleged daughter, claims the singer had a child after a brief fling with the wife of a close friend.
Mary said she felt an immediate sense of disbelief when she first heard the claims. The more she thought about it, the more baffled she became that such a story could have been published without anyone ever reaching out to her for comment.
According to the book, this alleged child was a closely guarded secret known only to a small circle of Freddie’s friends and confidants — and that Mary herself was part of that group.
Mary, who had been in a relationship and then a lifelong friendship with Freddie from 1969 until his death in 1991, responded by saying: "I was named as a party to a story that spread across the world. And so, as I thought about it more, my disbelief turned into bewilderment as to how this story, referencing me, had hatched without a single person making contact with me first."
She went on to add: "Despite it being claimed that I knew about the existence of a secret child and kept it secret, not one person has attempted to contact me for a right of reply."
Freddie Mercury passed away in 1991 from bronchial pneumonia brought on by complications from AIDS.
The book alleges that during his lifetime, Freddie had a secret affair with a friend’s wife, resulting in the birth of a child the book refers to only as ‘B’.
It claims that Freddie kept 17 volumes of personal diaries, written from the moment he learned he was going to be a father, which were later handed over to ‘B’.
The book also includes alleged writings from ‘B’ herself, who is said to be 48 years old, working as a medical professional somewhere in Europe. She claims to have had a close and loving relationship with Freddie “from the moment I was born” through the final 15 years of his life.
In her account, ‘B’ states that Freddie: "Entrusted his collection of private notebooks to me," and further claims: "Mary Austin, the wonderful woman who was to all intents and purposes his wife until death parted them, knew absolutely everything about him, including all his undisclosed secrets."
Mary strongly disputes these allegations, stating: "The truth is that I am simply not the guardian of such a secret. I've never known of any child or of any diaries."
She also added: "I have no knowledge of the diaries or them being 'entrusted' to a child. I was with him most days in the months before his death. If Freddie had indeed had a child without me knowing anything about it that would be astonishing to me."
